Hi Everyone! I am 29 years old, In March 2006 I was diagnosed with Stage IIIc

breast cancer. I had a bilateral Mastectomy in April, Finished Chemo September

14th and finished Radiation Dec. 11th. Yesterday i had my first check up and

all of my tests came back neg. My dr. told me that I was finally cancer free!

I did not post that much on this group but I always read everyone elses posts.

I could not have done this without all of you. You are all in my prayers.

Thank you so much.

I'm happy for you. That sounds great! Now, could you please tell

me what tests were run that lead to the " cancer free " diagnosis? I am

IIIB still in treatment. I've had chemo and bilateral mastectomy. Will

probably be starting hormone therapy " soon, " and rads in a couple of

months. I presently am undergoing reconstruction. I would like to know

what tests, etc. are coming up for me.

Thanks!!

Frances,

I think that 's " cancer free " means that there is currently

no evidence of disease (NED) which is certainly wonderful news (for

her and for us all with NED. From what I know about B/C - and from

the way in which my Dr's inform me, having " no evidence " is likened

to being without the disease for now. NOT to say that many, many,

many people go with NED for years and years and throughout the rest

of their lives even, but B/C doesn't get " cured " in that way.

After you've finished your radiation and then start the hormone

therapy, you will see your oncologists/radiologist/surgeon/etc.,

probably every three months to start, they'll do blood tests to look

at markers and liver functions and you may get various scans and

CT's or MRI's to follow up. Eventually, you'll go longer in between

visits with them.

In my mind, I've finished with my treatments (surgery, chemo, rad)

and am on hormone therapy for the next 5 years. Each time I go for

the visits and get a report of NED - I'm good until the next set of

follow-ups. I'm looking forward to getting to that " once a year "

mark that I have to go (not every 3 months) and perhaps I'll feel

like a have more of a normal semblence of my life back.

I don't mean to minimize at all 's enthusiasm about

being " cancer free " - I indeed wish we all were. I just know, at

this point, I need to look at it in a different way, continue

fighting and praying for good outcomes. I think that's all any of

us can do.

Love,

Ellen

I understand this all too well. While it's nice to hear " cancer

free " I know full well that it really means " We cannot find evidence of

it at this point. " I am very interested in what all is involved in " not

finding evidence. " You answered my concerns well. FWIW markers won't

be able to be used for me because mine were " normal " to start with. It

seems a shame that, even with monitoring, evidence of new BC cannot be

detected until an actual tumor has been found, and it's millions of

cells in size. Do I have that correct?

I'd like to ask you why rads in the picture as well as chemo if bilateral

mastectomy and not lumpectomy was performed.

Also, how does it effect the success of reconstructive surgery if there is

radiaion involved?

It was my understanding that once they do mastectomy, chemo is sufficient and

no radiation is necessary.

can you please tell me if you had or are planning to have reconstructive

surgery, specifically implants put it?

I am interested to know because of the fact that you had radiation. My plastic

surgeon said that radiation complicates or eliminates possibility of implants.

Yet, I'm seeing that some women have radiation and implants as well.

I'm confused by this.

Thank you.

I had radiation also because I had 13 out of 21 lymph nodes positive for cancer.

It was done as a precaution

I am having reconstruction done. I have expanders in right now and I have an

appt with my ps on Monday to determine when I can have the implants put in. It

does complicate things but it is doable. They just need to wait a few months

until my skin is healed.
