Chemo 3 out of 4 hasn't been terribly pleasant. Because I said I had

nausea a week-and-a-half out from chemo, this last time, they

decreased the decadron, eliminated the zofran and gave me aloxi (in

addition to day 1 emend). The result: Nausea even before I finished

the chemo.

Even with days 2 and 3 of emend, dexamethasone and zofran for days

2-4, I was nauseous and now with nothing, it's constant. I get through

the day on peppermints and saltines and hope that at some point it'll

all subside, but I hate it.

Any advice or tips, I and my stomach would appreciate!

Cheryl,

Try drinking ginger ale. Its really good for an upset stomach. I always crave it

when I am getting sick. I will keep you in my prayers.

why did they stop the emend? perhaps your nausea a week out of chemo

the last time had nothing to do with chemo--perhaps you had a bug, you

know...

do you have a perscription of compazine on hand? I had that a a

rescue, if the emend, etc. failed to work...i never had to use it.

Have you tried Compazine?? Or the generic,

proclorparazine. That worked for me.

Ativan works very well; it also helps with calming you down so you can rest

easier

Ginger tea is also very soothing. Lipton maks one with lemon zest.

It has saved me on more than one occasion when I had a bug.

Not sure why they haven't prescrived compazine. Does that make you

drowsy? I really need something that doesn't so I can work...

It seems like all the drugs they've given me are for only a few days

out from chemo. Kind of frustrating, but I'm going to have to be more

insistent the next time -- I just thought maybe the aloxi would work...

Thanks.

it does make you drowsy - (i think - i never had to take it...)

what kind of work do you do? Are you currently on A/C? I had that

4x, over 12 weeks (once every three weeks) - though I know everyone

reats differently to the chemo, well for me, it sort-of knocked me

out for a couple of days--and though I took off the whole summer (I

had TONS of sick time saved up), I really *could* have

worked...except for those few days right after chemo - so is some

sort of intermittent leave available to you? (The half-life of A/C is

24 hours)

> It seems like all the drugs they've given me are for only a few days

that's because the assumption is that with the short half-life, the

side effects should be pretty much gone after a few days...(you know,

the pre-meds have the OWN side effetcs - for me, much more

debilitating...especially the decadron (dexametasone) )

Kind of frustrating, but I'm going to have to be more

I know this sounds simplistic, but when I was going through chemo, and the

anti-nausea meds just

weren't doing as much as I would have liked, I took my son's " Emetrol " . It's a

syrup that is sold

the help soothe children's stomachs when they have the barfs.

I have some left-over Zofran, so if your plan doesn't pay for it (it is quite

$$), email me off

list.

Take care,

Marisa,

Despite the nausea, I find working to be therapeutic -- while I come

in a little later than pre-breast cancer, take an afternoon nap each

day, go home early and work from there when I have to, the " normalcy "

of it makes me feel like this is just temporary...

Yes, like you, I'm having A/C over 12 weeks. I'm 3/4 of the way done

and knowing that helps too. I've never had a great stomach, so I

suppose my reaction to these drugs shouldn't be surprising, but it

doesn't make it any more pleasant.

Thanks for the info and advice.

cheryl - i do know what you mean about working...I am glad though,

that I took the summer off...i did alot of reading, and thinking,

spent tons of time by myself--and alot of time with my son, being

peaceful with him, and soothing his fears...he went to summer camp,

but unlike school, he could play hookie whenever he wanted ;)...and

we would lie down together and talk, and I would watch his Power

Ranger videos with him, and escape with him into his fantasy of

becoming a Power Ranger, and making a morpher that could change

EVERYTHING...

I've been back to work since september (I'm a lawyer)...but

everything feels--different--i don't know, i'm just skirting around

the edges of my thoughts; trying not to think or feel...

after the A/C will you be taking a taxane (Taxol or Taxotere)? I had

10 weeks of taxotere/herceptin (was supposed to be 12 weeks, but it

was utterly intolerable for me...) and now I'm just doing herceptin

once every three weeks...
