Guest guest
I didn't quite get it about how to be able to eat Bananas using Sour crean. Please tell me...do you mix the banana in or dip it? I have sooo much to learn! Thanks
Guest guest
, I am new to this too so I'll share my last week's experience since it was a good one! :-) I tried cutting up a banana, first try was a medium one, second try was a large one, and mixed it with splenda for sweetner, and then mixed it all with 2T of regular sour cream. Two hours later tested my BS and it was FINE. Then I got really brave and tried the exact same thing with blueberries. Same thing happened. Now I can eat my usual summer foods again. Instead of having them with bread (too high carb count I think but am not yet sure) I decided to use 5 slim sliced triscuits since the carb count was lower than bread and it gave me enough 'crunchy' so I didn't have to eat just the fruit and sour cream. Then I got really brave and have twice since decided to try this late almost before going to bed although it seemed that FOR ME eating after 7pm gave me a higher BS# the next morning. It didn't! It gave me a lower one. Another yippeeeee! :-) I mix the fruit, splenda, and sour cream all together and it is a delight for me. I learned on this list (Mike, thank you) that having fats with carbs(sugar?) slows down the sugar absorbtion rate so your BS# stays more consistent and possibly lower. For me and the above info it seems to work. Checked it out with my endo team nutritionist and she said she though she explained this to me, but I have been taking in so much I might have missed it from her but not from this list. Now on to figuring out how to apply this to other foods :-) and also try to keep the calorie count down to loose 20 more lbs!!!! I hate to burst anybody's bubble, but eating fat with carbs does not stop the conversion of the carbs into glucose, it merely delays the process. If you were to check your BG every hour fot four to five hours after rating, you will find that at some point your BG is going to spike high. Pizza is the most notorious food for doing this (why many diabetics don't eat pizza). People who use the newer insulin pumps have a method to counteract this delayed effect with their pump (square wave bolus) which delivers the required insulin over an extended period of time (1/2 to 4 or 5 hours). I would strongly that when trying new foods and food combinations, that we need to check our bgs after 2 hours, and with fat, somewhat longer. We are all unique, and there for different, so we have to determine for ourselves what to do. We have to manage our disease on our own on a daily basis, with an assist from our medical team. My endo made me responsible for managing my diabetes, with lots of help from him when necessary. We have to figure out for ourselves what we can and cannot eat. I rarely eat baking potatoes because they raise my BG too much, but I can new potatoes with little or no problem. I can eat Basmati rice, but regular rice raises my BG too much. I learned these things by keeping a food diary along with my BG readings taken before meals and two hours after eating. BTW, I am going to start using a pummp within a month, for insulin users life is so much simpler. I am a T2 for 20 yrs, now T1 with some insulin resistance. I have been on Lantus & Humalog for eight months now, test BG 6-8 times per day, and 6-9 shotd per day. My A1C has gone from 10.8 to 6.2, and I only have 3 BGs over 250 since MDI. Happy and healthy living and eating Giles.
Guest guest
Giles, I did as you said and tested before and after. Sorry, but for me, I do not spike eating bananas and/or blueberries if I have sour cream with it. As you mentioned we are all different. I've somehow managed to loose 30+ lbs in about 4 months just by eating more healthy and leaving junk food alone on the counters. My A1C went from 6.2 to 5.1. Maybe I am learning a lot from this list? :-) I will probably now start trying more foods and see what happens. test test test as long as I can get the strips! Guest guest
I have checked my bs hours and hours after eating fat and carbs, and mine does NOT spike. Remember, each and every person is different. I do know that it does not stop the conversion of carbs to glucose, but it may slow it enough for the body to eleminate it before it is converted =) But, yes, we all must remember to test later sometimes too =) Angelia in OR Re: BANANAS with Sour Cream: I hate to burst anybody's bubble, but eating fat with carbs does not stop the conversion of the carbs into glucose, it merely delays the process. Guest guest
When I read about the above subject I was intrigued and tried it one night. I very seldom eat bananas because they are so high in carbs. My Fasting blood sugar is fairly high in the morning. Before going to bed I sliced a banana, 2 tbsps sour cream and splenda and ate it my sugar was lower. I have done it several night in a row with the same result. I will not do it tonight to see what happens. If I want lower blood sugar in the morning I usually have to stop eating at 7.00 PM. Will let you know the results of experiment. Guest guest
using fat free sour cream doesn't slow down the carb/sugar absorbtion. Need to use sour cream with fat.
