Guest guest
Hi, Have just joined this group. I was diagnosed with multiple tumours in both breasts July 2006 and had a double mastecomy in August the day before my 50th birthday. All were grade 1 and eostrogen and progestrone positive. I tested negative to Herceptin. All my lymph glands were removed. On the right 1 out of 13 tested positive but on the left 9 out of 18 were positve and there was some spread to the surrounding skin area. No sign of cancer anywhere else in my body. I recovered very well and quickly after surgery. [ 18 years ago had major back surgery. Spent 4 weeks in hospital and then 6 months in plaster from shoulders to top of legs. Anything else seems easy]. Stared chemo 5 weeks later and returned to full-time work at the same time. Just had time off for the treatments. I had 4 courses of 2 drugs mixed (forgotten the names - they are written down somewhere, one was red). I did these as dense treatments ie 2 weeks apart and then as I seemed to be so well my specialist suggested I try doing the next drug Taxil as a dense tretament as well. I had a large dose of Taxil 4 times 2 weeks apart and finished just over 2 weeks ago in time for Christmas. Am now on holidays in January with my 10 year old daughter. I am a single Mum. Due to have 25 radiation treatments starting Feb. While on holidays I want to get as fit as I can. And stay well. I have moments where I worry about how well I felt and feel despite the chemo. I live in Australia and my daughter and I want to swim again. Most of my life I have swum laps and danced. I plan on going back to tap dancing soon but am hesitating about swimming in chlorinated pools. Don't know what to do as I love swimming and don't live near the ocean anymore.I have been reading about avoiding chlorine in drinking water, showers and products.Wondering if anyone has any advice on this subject. Is anyone out there swimming in chlorinated pools? Meg __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Welcome Meg, Sounds like you got through treatments great. Thats wonderful. I don't swim so can't answer your question. I had surgery in May 1990. We do have a hot tub and have to but chlorine in there and so far I haven't had any problems. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
Hi Meg, Your email was the first I heard of a chlorine/cancer connection. I learn so much from this board! I found this article that discussed some European countries using ozone to reduce chlorine. Maybe you can contact the pool(s) you swim at and ask whether they're using ozone or how much chlorine is in their pool water. -
Guest guest
Hi Meg - sounds like you've got a great attitude and are progressing along in your treatment. The only thing I was told about swimming in chlorinated pools was not to do it while I was taking radiation. Although, it was okay to swim in the ocean, pools with chlorine were out for the duration of the treatment (2 months for me). I'm sure your radiologist can advise you further on this. Best of luck!
