Guest guest
Hi,I've taken metoprolol for 7 years, for a fib and it's an awesome drug. The doc has needed to increase it only once. The only side effect for me was drowsiness the first week.Between that and Xanax I can handle the a fib.The doc says I'll still get some breakthrough a fib but I try to ride it out.Good Luck, *Debbie* xavierboy2002 Mprudhomme1@...> wrote: Has anyone taken this drug? Even though my EP prescribed it, my GP likes it better as a beta blocker than atenolol, which I took for a couple of years before that. I started on 50 mg twice a day, not for PVCs but just for afib and then aflutter. Since January (and being in NSR again as my normal state!) I've been weaning myself off it. My EP has me on a schedule to be completely off it by July 16. I tapered down to 25mg twice a day, and today I will begin 25mg once a day for two more months and then, hurray, another med off my list. Standard beta blocker side effects. Relaxation, drowsiness, a bit more difficult to do strenuous exercise -- depends on the dose. I use a beta blocker when I have to speak in public, takes the shakes out of my hands and voice. I plan on keeping a few on hand even when I'm finished my once-a-day regimen. Helena
Guest guest
I've been taking Toprol XL 50mg (which was prescribed for rate control along with Flecainide) for over two years. It has kept my heart rate low and brought my borderline-high blood pressure nummbers down nicely. I experienced a little fatigue when I started it, otherwise no AE's. - > > Has anyone taken this drug? If so was it for pvcs or what? Guest guest
My $.02: I took Toprol XL 50 mg. from January, 2005 until my flutter ablation in April, 2006. I hated it with the heat of a thousand suns, but I have diagnosed major depression, so that's a contributing factor. I had both a-fib and flutter while taking it (and Flecainide) - my (former) cardiologist refused to believe I had atrial flutter despite an EKG from the hospital, since Toprol doesn't do that. Heh. When the Toprol finally got out of my system, I had more energy than I'd had in years. I even cook! For the 16 mos. I was taking it, I would go to bed immediately after work, sometimes as early as 6:00 PM, and sleep until the following morning. So it's fair to conclude that I had debilitating fatigue and depression, despite taking an anti-depressant. My chart now firmly notes that I do not tolerate beta blockers well. Guest guest
, I had a similar experience with metoprolol. It made me so fatigued I couldn't walk across my backyard. I am a person that normally never sits down, on the go all the time, exercising, gym, yardwork. It was very debilitating and depressing. I had previously been on Acebutolol (Sectral) which is also a cardioselective b-blocker but when the a-fib was occuring more frequently, the cardiologist I was seeing at that time wanted me on a more " potent " b-blocker to control my HR better. Well, after trying to tolerate it about 9 months, (also had very cold hands and feet to the point of being painful), I told my current cardiologist (EPS) that I just couldn't hack it any longer. I am back on Sectral w/o the side effects, able to exercise daily and do whatever I want...no more fatigue. I also have not experienced any difference in my heart rate when I'm in a-fib...keeps it in the 120's (I usually self-convert in 8-11 hours). So, don't write off all b-blockers...you may want to try this one Hines catherinehines@...> wrote: My $.02: I took Toprol XL 50 mg. from January, 2005 until my flutter ablation in April, 2006. Guest guest
Question… Metoprolol and Atenolol are both cardio selective Beta Blockers…. However, Atenolo was designed specifically to not cross into the CNS [lipid solubility mod.] Has anyone found the side effect from Atenolol is more tolerable? I have used Toprol XL – and found vertigo, fatigue, etc – to be really bad…. Looking for a better blocker…. _____ From: AFIBsupport [mailto:AFIBsupport ] On Behalf Of Carroll Sent: Wednesday, May 17, 2006 8:15 PM To: AFIBsupport Subject: RE: Re: metoprolol , I had a similar experience with metoprolol. Guest guest
I know from prescribing both of these drugs for years, that atenolol has less CNS side effects than Metoprolol...patients have fewer complaints of sleepiness and fatigue on Atenolol.
