I never had any friends, prefered adults then people my own age. No one bothered

to try to get to know me, and I was very isolated, alone, and abandoned. From

Grade 6 onwards I felt like there was something wrong with me, and for a short

time I didn't want to live. I hated who I was, I hated that I had a syndrome

that no one - including myself knew about.

I never did find out that I had CHARGE until 2001. So yea, it was hard. I had

no friends, school was unbearable, and the teachers were horrible. It wasn't a

pleasent life, it was hard and challenging. But now when I think about it, and

if someone asked me " if I had to live it all over again, would I change

anything " , my answer would be " NO, I wouldn't change a thing " .

Sincerely yours; Krista. 27 year old CHARGEr.

HI. I had that too. Except, it started in elementary and the effects are still

here. Basically, I was isolated. I was sent to a DHH school after 1 year at

Garden Grove (preschool at that school. If it was like 5th or 6th grade I

started going to Simi, I might have had some phone chats). No one really

understood me that well. The school was TERRIFIED of every abnormal thing I did.

I think a bloody nose would have SCARED the heck out of them, instead of " Aw,

another one? Okay, Mr or Ms or Mrs I need to go to the nurse, be back when it is

done. " . I had health aids right next to me all day, thus discouraging kids from

talking to me. Also, I couldn't relate to the dhh kids because they were and

probably still different from me. (Most of them went to Rio Mesa, which has an

API score of 600 something. Santa Su has........813! SO BBBBUUUURRRRNNNNN

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!)Thus, my school socializing skills were not as developed. I

mainly made friends outside of school. Middle school was my " Getting used to

independence period " . I also got rid of health aids at that time too, thanks to

my mom's persuasion skills. High school, I sorta made a few buddies. Now we know

each other as friends I guess. This year I started hanging out with a new group

of girls and although they don't have CHARGE or any genetic disorders, I feel

more comfortable with them than the other group of girls I hang out with. The

first group is , Ashleigh, Diane, and their buddies. The new group is

, Clover, and Sammy. I got a lot more people saying hi to me starting

sophmore year on, cuz freshman are newbies whom very few people new.

Hillside wasn't much of a " AAAAHHHHH KEITH HAS A BLOODY NOSE!!!!! CALL HIS

MOM!!!!! CALL HIS DAD!!!!! CALL 9-1-1!!!!!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG OMG " school. lol at

the sentence. The teachers were friendlier with me. The teachers at Simi were

sort of distant, but the teachers at Hillside were closer, so that brought me

some warmth. I stilll couldn't quite get along with the kids that well, mostly

cuz I was smarter. The middle school kids made it look like an asylum. lol lol

lol, really, you gotta see it. Besides, my 8th grade graduation showed where

kids got their wild side, from their fathers acting like they are watching their

favorite sports team winning. High school was a lot more friendlier. Throughout

the year, the teachers might ask me if everything is alirght for the moment.

They are also willing to chat with me in the halls, before school, during lunch,

or after school. They do say hi to me during passing period. Although I am

starting to make more friends in school, I have a lot more buddies outside of

school. If you are wondering what I am taking for my senior year, I am taking

spanish 3, AP Govt, TA, AP Stats, Honors Anatomy (I get to dissect a cat, YAY),

and english 12. If I had TA for 7th period, english for 6th, spanish for 5th,

Honors Anatomy for 4th, and the two AP courses before that, then my day would

start off hard, and end easy. 1st period is before 8 and is an optional period.

I don't know why the school did that, they thought it was better, but I

disagree. It makes thing confusing.

I actully Had some freinds in High School, or people I could just talk to and

joke with and what not. But I had really two best freinds that did not have a

disablity they saw me as a person right away. When I first met them I intuduced

myself and we all hung out like ever other weekend. I am still freinds with one

of them now we mange to keep intouch even after high school. So I think it

depends on were you are and who you talk to I did not have freinds in Middle

school but I did have a few here and there that would take the time and talk to

me in High school and they did not have any disablitys at all.

Patty that is great your OCD's are going, and that your learning how to

like yourself better, its something i need to work on, liking myself.. It

will stop me worrying to smuch whether people like me or not..

I know i used to care more about always talking to people. But not anymore.

I remember lots of times id be on the train with my friend and if she didnt

say anything for like five minutes id be like " whats wrong " or " are u

annoyed at me " But now i just value the friends i DO have

about the OCD thing, i dont realloy have it anymore....the one i told you

about, its pretty much gone :)

I dont sign into aol much. I just did then and u werent online.....

I am defietnly coming to CA next year. I cant wait. :)

Patty-

That's awesome! You know, I've noticed similar changes in myself. I didn't

have OCD, but I had a much stronger need to talk to friends very often and

have that constant connection with another person. Now that I'm more

comfortable in my life and in my own skin, I don't have the same " need " . I

still enjoy my friends a great deal, but I'm not feeling so lost if I can't

talk to them about something. I can get through my days without feeling

that I have to talk things over with a friend so often. Don't know if that

makes much sense, but I can relate to what you're saying completely.

Hey , Maddie, Chantelle, Bel, Ellen, and Krista!

Dang, long list of name friends I got here, lol! Okay, I know that

I post my experience about my friends in the past, but I'll it again

since Maddie is new here, okay-dokey?

Yeah, I did have some experience struggling making friends in a

hearing world. Since I'm hard of hearing, and I always grew up in a

Deaf/H.H. Culture, and most of my life most of my friends got some

kind of disabilities, even some deaf/h.h. with other disabilites too!

Yeah, I don't know why most 'normal deaf/h.h.' won't hang out with

me, not even the 'regular type' hearing people either! Yeah, it does

get kinda frustrating ya know. RIght now, I got a total of 20-30

friends, and half of them are CHARGErs, few non-chargers who are

deaf/h.h., but only 2 of them I know are just only 'h.h.' without

any other disabilities! But, I do got other friends with

disabilities too! I think it got to do with feeling comfortable and

being used with special needs/disabled friends ya know. Cuz, we all

got something in common, we all got something to share ya know.

Even Heidi here (yeah I'm at her house, yay) also have trouble

making friends too! SO, I had to help her make friends with my

friends, same thing with too! So, now that both and

Heidi knows each other, they also knows some of my deaf/h.h.

friends, and few hearing friends now, cool man!

Even getting a gf is hard for me too! Cuz, I had 2 ex gf who were

special needs, and now I got 3rd 1, Heidi, yay! Heidi is like

me/like us here, Charger, but she was in a special needd class. So

yeah, most girls I get are mostly learning disabled/or got other

disabilities. Oh Well, that's okay, I'm used of it man! Cuz, I got

nothing to hide, not ashame of my disabilities, so I rather share my

disabilities/conditions to my specially challanged friends ya know.

Even use sign language, cuz most of my friends understand the deaf

culture too!
