Guest guest
Wow, Lynne, that's super about your blood sugar tests! Keep up the good work on the diabetes and the recovery from surgery. You can do it! Billie purple7raptor purple7raptor@...> wrote: Hi, I was diagnosed with breast cancer on Nov. 29, 2005. Then, doing tests re the cancer, they found I am diabetic. That was on Dec. 19 but I wasn't told until Dec. 23. My glucose was 430, but that was not fasting. It was scary and horrible to have two such diagnoses right on top of each other. My doctor started me on Metformin on Dec. 27. My surgery was scheduled for Jan. 12. My doctor said to eat as few carbs as possible until the surgery. Not much time to bring down that glucose! However, I did have the surgery and my sugars were about 140 - 150 then. That was from eating less than 20 grams of carb a day, and taking 1,000 mgs. of Metformin twice a day after the first week on it. I just had an A1C, lipids and fasting blood sugar test. My A1C went from 7.3 at the end of February to 5.6. Wow! I am so happy about that! And my lipids showed my cholesterol to be 339 at the end of February and 193 now without any meds for cholesterol. My fasting sugar was 83. I was sent to a Diabetes Center and they added Glyburide, 2.5 mg. twice a day. I also was able to finally add more carbs to my diet. I don't have this down perfectly yet, but I'm working on it and have certainly learned a lot from your posts. Guest guest
Lynn, That is incredible all that you've accomplished in so short a time. Did you need chemo or is that over with? How terrifying that would be! You know, I would not be surprised if the cancer had pushed your blood sugar up. I know infection can do that and also injuries. To go down 300 points right after surgery--that makes me wonder. Anyway, you're an inspiration to me. My fasting blood sugar was 130, but the A1C showed it had been in the 170s. My triglicerides was 357! So, I'm trying hard to get all that down. I go for a re-check the end of August. Guest guest
Becky, Hopeful violinist? I play the violin! :-) Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I just finished chemo. Then, I went for the A1C, etc. Now, I'll be starting radiation for 5 weeks. That has some other things before you have it too, so I won't be starting it for a couple of weeks, I think. Yes, it has been terrifying. You sure are right about that. I never thought of the cancer pushing my sugar up. You could be right. All I know is I practically starved to try to get my glucose down for the surgery. My PCP said they wouldn't do the surgery if it didn't come down and I needed the surgery. If you control your diabetes, I'm sure your triglycerides and glucose will come down. That's what brought mine down. I couldn't believe it either! Guest guest
Hello. My name is Liz and I'm 26 years old. I thought I'd give you some history about my hypothyroidism since this is all new to me. In June, 2005 I notice a lump on my throat about the size of a lime. I got into the doctors office, and after going through different ones in order to get an endochronologist, and they said that my thyroid was 1/2 over active and 1/2 underactive. I had radition treatments in November 2005 to shrink the thyroid. In March 2006, my thyroid levels were normal. I moved from the desert southwest to the Pacific Inland Northwest, and I gained about 30 pounds in 3 months. I had it checked again, and my thyroid level was at 19 (which mean hypothyroidism). My new doctor has me on synthroid (.088mg) and I'm not really noticing anything from it. I'm still losing my hair in the shower, my nails are still breaking, but I am actively counting calories and have lost 6 pounds since Jan 1 by doing so. I've heard nightmares about soy products (like soy milk) and that it is actually bad for the thyroid and any meds I take. I'm trying to lose weight (54 pounds to go) and I hope to lose it by Oct 2007 When my husband comes back from Iraq. I've been on synthroid since late November 2006. Anyone else on this and how does it affect you? Thanks, Liz
Guest guest
I took synthroid only once in my life but I didn't have good luck with it at all. I had already been on a different brand for some time, and although the dose was the same, all sorts of things happened. I started gaining weight, my hair was falling out by the handful and a bunch of other complaints that I don't really remember. I was taking a Canadian brand called Eltroxin and I had good luck with that one, but now I'm in the US and have been on Levoxyl for about 2 months. I've had much better luck with my weight and my hair is as thick as it ever was. I actually take a combination of Levoxyl and Armour, but if you can't get that, I'm wondering if your doc will let you try the Levoxyl brand just for comparison. Also, they do start you out slowly and increase the dose every 6 weeks or so for the first year. Since it's only been a couple of months, you may be due for an increase after your next labs... Judy I've been on synthroid since late November 2006. Guest guest
if you read the information packet in synt it will tell you that hair loss is an effect, of course being hypo causes your hair to fall out to, along with breaking and becoming like straw. when i went hypo i was 110lb gained up to 150lb in just a few months and continued to gain until i was 175lb. i took syn for 6 yrs and all i wanted to do after work was go home and sit on the couch until bed time. my TSH was 3.82, i also have antibodies meaning that i have hashis, so i keep my TSH suppressed and am trying to get my FT3 and FT4 in the upper range. I started taking armour in may 06 and now when i get home i get the dogs and go to the park everyday and walk for about 50mins. I am sleeping better and cant seem to sit still unless i over do it. still not completey well but getting there, i lost about 11 pds last month and am now finally under 150. you might want to ask your dr to check FT3 and FT4, along with ferritin, also do a TPO to check for antibodies which destroy the thyroid start eating 5-6 small meals a day, avoid sugar and bad fats. eat a protein and fiberous carbs together, > renee > --------------------------------- > > I've been on synthroid since late November 2006. Guest guest
I've seen that in the synthroid info, but it's the only brand that ever did that to me. There must be something different about it, maybe their source of the levothyroxine sodium. Do you know? I did not have this problem with the Eltroxin, Levoxyl and of course Armour...
