Guest guest
Is there a service in the State of Texas that does not have job openings? Thoughts along these lines have been cussed and discussed. Many services have had to offer Bonus Sign-ons, payment for further certification upgrades, etc. We, for the first time in our lives, hired about 8 Basic and Intermediate level employees and are now putting them thru paramedic school, in house. I do believe that if wages would match the education and practice, we could make some sort of progress. When I first came into this career, it paid about $8-9/hr and now I see some places offering $15-17/hr. If it doesn't improve the types of paramedics we are getting out of certain schools, we will lose skills, advanced protocols, and faith from the American public and physicians. Just thoughts from an old and aging man. Andy

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Guest guest
Ok, if 15-17$ per hour is not high enough,at what rate would there be sufficient remuneration? Just curious? rachfoote@... wrote: Is there a service in the State of Texas that does not have job openings? Thoughts along these lines have been cussed and discussed. I do not know if there is a number. I firmly believe that Paramedics, for their skills and abilities, do warrant more than this. I have a son cutting fiberglass for sewage containers, that make more than this. I do not compare or believe that anyone working at a fast food business makes as much as we do, but I have heard that on this list server. Many services do offer sign on bonuses but does that improve what we attract and put on the streets through our paramedic classes. There are many quality Paramedics and there are some that are not as qualified. But isn't that the same as Doctors. There are many great physicians and some that would not make good Paramedics but they still all make great salaries in parallel with their education. I do know that I left an 80k job as refinery worker and did not have nor use the education that I got as a paramedic and that was in 1982. I came back to the job I had worked in the military and truly loved. I just needed 20 years away from the past to realize that I loved it. That being said, I see many people that come into this business for a job, not for the love of the job. I say if you had the IQ to become Mr. Gates and start a Microsoft company and did not have a love or passion for the work, you just basically got a job. If you only do it for the pay, then it is just a job and you will regret it the rest of your life. But if you do love the job and get the education we offer you, you should receive like pay for what you do. We lose many great medics for this reason and keep many that could care less as long as they get to work eighty hours a week, buy a brand new truck and burn themselve and their patients out after 10 to 15 years. Maybe you could come up with an number. I just worry about the future of the profession as I have known and loved it. The greatest equipment in the world, computers, toughbooks, hydraulic stretchers, etc. that they could care less if they dropped it off of a cliff, ran over it with an ambulance, as long as they do not have to pay for it. I would have died for this stuff. Me and many of the people who have worked with and for me remember what it was like to have to beg for good IV catheters, drip sets, and something besides a lifepak 5. Maybe I should quit ranting and go out and look for Paramedics that aren't there. Andy

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone.
