Re: HB 1212, increasing the penalty for causing injury to a police officer or

firefighter by a drunk driver.

EMS personnel are not covered by this bill's provisions unless they are

fire-based. If you believe that EMS personnel, when responding to or providing

care in emergencies, should be afforded the additional protection proposed for

police and firefighters, please contact Rep. a Pierson at the following

address and express your thoughts.

The legislation, House Bill 1212 by state Rep. a Pierson, D-Arlington, is

named for Freeto and Medlin. It would take intoxication assault from a

third-degree felony to a second-degree felony if a police officer or firefighter

is injured. The prison sentence, now two to 10 years, would increase to two to

20 years. The maximum fine, $10,000, would not change.

Intoxication manslaughter involving a police officer or firefighter would go

from a second-degree felony to a first-degree felony, which carries a prison

sentence of five to 99 years and a maximum fine of $10,000.

Any chance of including EMS responding to or working an emergency call as well?

(EMSAT, are you listening?)

Regardless, it's a great idea...

The answer to your question is yes, EMSAT is listening. The problem is

about 50,000 certified EMS people expect a hand full of people to make sure

their

needs and wants are met.

So, my question is, are the EMS folks in Texas ready to get behind something

and support it? When I say support, I mean much more than just firing off

emails to a list and debating the issue online.

Sure, there is a chance of getting EMS included in this bill. All it takes

is a unified voice.

You're RIGHT ON TARGET! Thank you for saying this.

Where are the 50,000+ certificants when things that affect us are proposed in

the Legislature? Nowhere to be found, most of the time.

Folks, If you're not a part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Who loves you? EMSAT! But do you support your ONLY REPRESENTATIVE IN THE

STATE OF TEXAS?

Of course you don't. Why should you? What's in it for you?

Well, what's in it for you is keeping the wolves away, making sure that your

interests are preserved, and so forth, but y'all don't care about that do you?

Join EMSAT if you care. If you don't, then don't whine about what happens

to you when the legislature meets.

Gene,

Thanks for that link I just email Ms Pierson and asked why EMS is not

included in this bill. I also requested the bill be amended to include all

EMS personnel in addition to fire and police that are covered under the

current format.

A very true statement and it's EMS's job to educate those that need same but

it's awfully hard to be heard when out of 50,000 Providers EMSAT boasts a

Membership base of less than 300.

Gene,

The TAA has asked that Rep. Pierson specifically add EMS personnel to the bill

and she has reportedly done so when the bill went to Committee. The problem is

one of educating the politicans/public that not all EMS is fire based. Often

times we are omitted by ignorance rather than lack of respect.

Isn't it amazing how dumb some politicians are? All they have to do is look

around, but they don't. Anyway, I'm glad she has added us to the bill.
