I have received a couple inquiries concerning National Registry allowing NR

certified EMS persons to take their exam instead of a Refresher and

Additional CE, here is their statement it can be found at:

NREMT Board of Directors Approves Examination Option in Lieu of Refresher

and Additional Continuing Education for Re-certification

Posted 01/02/07

In November 2006, the NREMT Board of Directors approved the option to

validate continued cognitive competency by passing the newly introduced

computer

based test established by the NREMT. Nationally Registered EMTs (Basic,

Intermediate and Paramedic) can take the NREMT Computer Based Test (CBT) in

lieu of

completing a refresher and the additional continuing education hours

prescribed in the NREMT re-certification requirements.

For an NREMT due to re-register on March 31, 2007, if he/she chooses to use

passing the test to demonstrate competency, he/she must:

* Establish an NREMT account on the NREMT website

* Complete a re-registration examination application, (after

validating eligibility with your NREMT number) and pay the fee on the website

* Receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) Letter from the NREMT

* Follow the directions contained in the ATT Letter to schedule an

exam

* Take the examination between 1/2/07 and 3/31/07 (one attempt only)

* Pass the examination

* Receive and abbreviated re-registration form from the NREMT

* Return the form by March 31, 2007

Only one attempt of the examination is permissible. If a person fails the

examination he/she will be required by the NREMT to complete all refresher and

continuing education requirements by March 31 in order to be eligible to

re-certify. Taking the examination is an option and not a requirement at this

time.

NREMTs who expire in 2008 may challenge the examination (in lieu of

completing a refresher and additional continuing education) beginning October

1,

2007.

If the employer or state requires an NREMT to possess their National

Registry card before March 31, he/she will need to successfully complete the

exam

process by February 15 of the expiring year.

Please keep informed about this process by checking our website.

It is an option for Texas EMS Personal but now it is an option for NR folk,

if you plan to take the assessment exam as an option for recertification you

need to complete the DSHS recertification application and the NR application.
