Hi ,

Thanks for this heads up. I have sure wondered about this. I bought a

FreeStyle and I am very suspicious about its readings. Most of its test strips

are

worthless IMO.

Alice

ps- thanks for the big print as I have blurry vision today

I have two meters of different brands, and both pass the control solution

test. However, one meter reads consistently higher than the other, usually by

over 10 points. What to do?

Also, what is the time limit on using test trips once you've opened the vial?

Thanks to all for the helpful information you provide,

Hi , My little sister who I just called to ask what meter she used

told me when she was in the hospital with her diabetes they put her on the

Ascensia so she told me to go buy one. She said its very accurate. I hope to

get

one soon.

Half the strips that came with the FreeStyle simply wouldn't register

anything at all. I think they were somehow bad when I bought them.

Hoping to get one soon. Alice

Thank you for your observation. The meter I have that reads higher is also a

Freestyle (flash). I suspect the other one - an Ascensia Contour,

recommended by my doctor - is more accurate, but am not sure. I would

be interested if anybody here knows of any published data, on the web or

elsewhere, comparing the accuracy of different brands of meters?

In what way are most of those test strips worthless?

Thanks,

Hi ,

This can happen when you use the same brand of meters. Most manufacturers

will tell you, and it should be in your handbook, that meters can have a

15-20% error.

If you go to http://www.bayermeters.com/

You can get a coupon for a free Ascensia Breeze or Ascensia Contour.

I just got the Contour and I love it. You just print the coupon, get a

prescription from the dr. and take it to the pharmacy

Hi Alice,

Thanks for the observation - I am sticking with the Ascensia. I am

legally blind, and the screen has larger print and is much easier to

read than the Freestyle (even with the latter's backlighting, which

doesn't really do anything), and unlike the Freestyle, the Ascensia

beeps when the strip is ready for testing. That is very helpful for me

since reading the screen is difficult. Anyway, it's nice to know that

professionals are recommending the Ascensia.

I hope you can get the Ascensia with the free coupon. The strips are

outrageously expensive, so getting an Rx for them really helps.

Isn't that an awful lot of room for error? Alice

Maybe, but if you use 1 meter... you have consistency. Which is really the

name of the game. You probably aren't going to change your medications if

you test 115 or 125 (even taking insulin, I wouldn't alter it for that type

of difference)...

Your doctor may look at your tests and fine tune medications in the

beginning, however, they usually work off of the A1C.

Your best bet is to pick 1 meter and use only that meter. Then you can see

how foods impact you, and not worry about whether those '5 points' were due

to the extra grape or the different meter.

Does the actual number really make a very big difference? I look at the

trend: does my FBS# seem relative for days/wks, does my during the day BS#

stay relatively the same in an acceptable range, and of course to see how

new foods and combinations work for me (or not).

I take the point that you and Mike and Eunice are making. The strange

thing is that my two meters seem to track each other perfectly,

they're just always 10-12 points apart from each other - but each

would show the same trend. So I suppose that what one looks for with

this testing is trends rather than absolute values.

But as long as you've got a handle on the trend, it just feels nicer

to have a meter with lower values ;))
