Guest guest
Hi, My mom will be going to vegas soon for vacation. Anyone have any extra tips, or things she should have with her, to prevent possibly getting sick. She just started her weekly chemo 2 weeks ago. I've gotten her several those travel size purels, a couple kinds of hand wipes. Several types because of airline restrictions. I gave her some dusk masks to use on the plane. I'm not to sure if she will feel like an outcast, and may just skip wearing them so she doesn't stick out. She has a chemo port. Does she have to carry the id card they mailed her? My mom is still very shy about the whole cancer has come back, and any prepared response I can give her about what to expect, or polite line to give tsa people would be good. I have mixed feelings about the trip. I'm happy she is getting away to relax, but worried about her picking something up? Anyone use the zicam stuff to help word off colds? Is it safe to use w/chemo or does it depend what kind? Thanks for all your help. connie
Guest guest
Connie, I think you pretty much have it covered. We don't travel but maybe some of the other ladies can give you more ideas. One thing she needs to get plenty rest. Not stay up for hours if she is going to gamble etc. She needs to listen to her body. I will keep her in my prayers. Guest guest
Hi Connie, that's great that your mother is going on a vacation. I have a port and it's never been noticed when I go through security. I do carry the Port ID card in my wallet just in case. -
Guest guest
Connie, Unfortunately, I had to travel about 10 days after my last chemo treatment, via plane to Florida (we live in Michigan). My father-in-law passed away and there was no question I would be there. I was a little hesitant about travel on the plane. I had no problem wearing my pink ball cap with cancer pins on it which helped me stick out to everyone.... as well as the almost bald head. I was getting hair growth at the time but not enough that I felt comfortable going without the hat. It actually did two things for me. Got me seats in the airport when I needed to wait for luggage or support from other ('at a girls') for what I was going through. I did not wear a mask, although I did take them along just in case I sat on the plane with someone with a cough. I did take my id card, but the port is plastic (I think) so nothing went beep going through security. My biggest problem, however, was swollen feet. Make sure she gets up and walks around the plane periodically. I maintained the problem almost the whole time and was never able to wear anything other than my sandals. If she might have that problem make sure she has some very comfortable shoes with extra room in them. I did make sure I rested every afternoon, even if it was only to get my feet up over my heart for a couple hours. I was pretty tired yet from the chemo so taking an afternoon nap and going to bed early wasn't a problem. Most days I was able to sleep in as well. Just make sure she listens to her body and gets plenty of rest. Not sure any of that will help, but that was my experience. I never asked my onc if I could go, because it was important I be there, I just went. Barb Michigan Anyone share traveling tips when doing chemo Hi, My mom will be going to vegas soon for vacation. Guest guest
Hi and good morning Connie! I traveled after chemo treatments but before the masectomy and radiation. I had no problems at all, just used reasonable care when away from home. One thing though - On the TSA website there is a section about medication - if you don't want it to go through x-ray you can request that. and what they are supposed to do is look at visually as they do cosmetics, etc. My experience, though, was not like that. the TSA person took the medication, threw it in a container and put it aside out of my vision, which is also against TSA reguations. When I complained and told her what was in the bag it made no difference. I didn't want to complain too much, but I made them aware that I was NOT going to let the medication go unattended. I requested a supervisor who came over and looked at it and said it was ok - like she was really aware - lol. Just be very careful with the TSA; I know they have a job to do, but something lacks in the training. I hope everything works out well for your Mother.
