Hi all.....

I am having surgery on the 11th. I talked to my surgeon today to try to talk

him into going more 'distal' with me. He said he noramlly bypasses 4-5 ft of

intestine, but he would do 7 for me. He said this isn't very distal, but

would work good for me. Do any of you 'distals' remember how much you had

bypassed??

Thanks so much..

Terri

O.k.....another question. I need to lose 180 pounds. If my surgeon only

bypasses 7 ft. of intestine and I am still proximal, is it possible to lose

all of my weight?? Has anyone else lost that much being proximal??

Thanks...

Mega, like 15+ ft. That measurement is not in my op report, only the common &

alimentary channel measurements are shown

One of the guys in our support group lost 385 with the shortest proximal known

to man. So far, so good.

Of course, there is the KEEPING it off that might be an issue. Or not. He'll

have to work at it to keep it off. I don't mean work like crazy, but be mindful.

Maybe.

Dear Terri,

My doctor does only proximal, and in our group we have several who have lost

around 150 pounds, and one fellow who lost 200 in 7 months (of course guys

lose faster than women). I'm sure if you follow the " program " you will lose

all the necessary weight. Good luck, and God bless....

Terry, most people usually end up with only 100 cms bypassed. a cm is a

third of an inch. You've got a medial there, I believe. You should lose

weight fine with that. If your doc is REALLY uncomfortable doing a distal

distal, you will probably need to find another doc. Most distals are

measured by what is left, not how much is taken out. Distals have very

special requirements in terms of supplementation and monitoring, and some

docs are not comfortable being responsible for that kind of monitoring.

Jayne - Yes, they are talking about the RNY. Distal refers to the amount of the

bypass being far away from the pouch or a great distance. Proximal means near.

They are talking feet, but usually I've heard it expressed in centimeters. You

have to ask your surgeon how much they bypass. I have 150 cm. of intestine

bypassed which is the far end of proximal or beginning of medial depending on

who you talk to.

>>lost 385 pounds with the shortest proximal known to man, (Mom)

Mom,

That gives me hope. I started out at 351.2 and would like to get down

to 145-150 pounds. I know that I am proximal because my surgeon does not do

medial or distal surgeries. I don't know if I fall into the " shortest

proximals known to man, " I hope/pray not, but I feel like I am going to be

able to do this with diligence on my part.

So far I've lost 106 pounds. Protein shakes and exercise help a great

deal.

Love,

Trace
