Treatments that specifically target cancer cells already are saving the lives of thousands of people every year, said Louis DeGennaro, senior vice president of research for the New York-based society. But improving and developing drugs that target cancer cells are only part of the good news for the nearly 119,000 people who will be diagnosed with a blood cancer this year, DeGennaro said. On the horizon, he said, are vaccines that treat early-stage blood cancer, genetic treatments that block cancer growth and better drugs that use antibodies to kill cancer cells. ``We are seeing a shift in the way people think about treating cancer,'' he said. DeGennaro spoke this morning at a breakfast meeting sponsored by the West Michigan Branch Office of the society. In an interview before his presentation at the Kalamazoo Country Club, the research director said the most recent success story is a drug called Gleevec. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society awarded about $60 million in grants to scientists in 2006. This year, that amount will be about $64 million, he said. DeGennaro said most people don't realize that most cancer researchers must raise their own money for research, which means they rely heavily on organizations such as his for help. As the society works toward a cure for blood cancers by 2015, it will be awarding grants to teams of researchers who can work together on projects, DeGennaro said. He said the society is also seeking to streamline the process that takes new drugs from the laboratory to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval. The society is also working to enroll more adult patients in clinical trials of new therapies. ``If we can keep the focus and the momentum going ... by 2015, the vast majority of newly diagnosed blood-cancer patients will receive a treatment that brings a cure,'' DeGennaro said.
