Does anybody know what criteria a cardiolologist must pass to become an

EP.

Does this require ablations to be taken into account ?.

Hi, ,

You can find the requirements for certification of EPs at

http://www.abim.org/cert/policies_aqccep.shtm. This is the site of

the American Board of Internal Medicine. You can also check and see

if your EP is certified.

As far as ablations are concerned: " To assure credible confirmation

of proficiency in certain procedural techniques, candidates must

perform a minimum of 150 intracardiac procedures in at least 75

patients, of which 75 are catheter ablations (including

postdiagnostic testing) and 25 are initial cardioverter-defibrillator

implantations (including programming). Participation in diagnostic EP

studies (including mapping) is necessary, as is implantation and

programming of pacemakers...Performance of the required minimum

number of procedures is not a guarantee of proficiency. The Board

will seek substantiation from the training program director that the

candidate acquired the requisite skills and is competent to provide

comprehensive and specialized medical care in the field of clinical

cardiac elctrophysiology. "

Of course, this doesn't say anything about what kind of catheter

ablations they have to perform. That is, I don't know if some or any

of the 75 catheter ablations have to be afib ablations.
