I love to read novels and magazines. I am reading Jan Karon's 'The Mitford

Years " . Also, got some Mother Earth News and Countryside magazines from

freecycle yesterday. Tomorrow, I'm fixing a pot of tea and reading some of the

magazines.

What are you reading now?

Eunice,

I'm reading " Full of Grace " by Dorothea Benton right now. Got

hooked on her books last year after a local columnist in our newspaper

raved about her. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of her books....especially

fun summer reading!

I'm currently reading *The DaVinci Code. *I guess I am going at it

backwards. I went to see the movie. Now I am reading the book. I enjoyed

the movie & like the book even better.

Since I have recently returned from Paris and have been to the Louvre, it

was neat seeing it in film.

I don't normally read too many fictions. I usually like nonfiction. This

one somehow caught my eye.

I just re-read a book by Norah Lofts which is one of my favs: Pargeters A

historical Novel of Seventeeth Century England. Before that I read The River

Road and it was TOO DEPRESSING. I got it out of the library. I just ordered a

book on Adult Onset diabetes at Amazon.com.

Love to read, Alice

Hi Lois,

Do you ever listen to books on tape?

I just recently finished reading How to Survive Your Doctor's Care by Pamela

Gallin, M.D. I recommend it. It really puts into perspective what doctor's

should an dshould not be doing and how to move around the medical system.

This sounds great. I'm going to get it this week.

I just finished reading A LONG WAY DOWN by Nick Hornsby. Before that I read

POLAR by T.R. Pearson. Yesterday I began reading NIGHT by Elie Wiesel (an Oprah

Book Club choice). Then I have 3 more novels in line to read after that.

Additionally, I am reading a number of books on diabetes.

I just read 's Beach Road. I passed it on to 2 friends who

are raving about it, too. They are making a movie of it, so if you plan to

see the movie, DON'T read the book. It will spoil the ending for you.

Lois,

Lots of books are on tape now. Public libraries have them. There is a

service on-line like netflix for movies that rents books on tape too. It is

www.booksfree.com. Can you see enough for the large-print versions?

I hope you are listening to books on tape/CD. They are great and there are

books for every taste. I just finished Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of

Rivals and am now listening to the creepy Saul's book Shadows (all of

his books are creepy). I don't listen to the radio very much when I'm

driving instead I always have a book on tape/CD going. I pick up a book a

week that way. My wife listens too. She just finished two Nero Wolfe

books read by Pritchard (highly recommend anything he read). We

both love the Nero Wolf mysteries and the reading really makes the

characters come alive.

I've listened to both the Odyssey and the Iliad as well as Beowulf and

Gilgamesh. These are all long epic poems that I have read before but really

haven't enjoyed nearly as much as I did listening to them preformed by an

outstanding reader. Most of the time I listen to mysteries and thrillers.

I get the unabridged versions from the public library for free. We don't

buy the audio books at the bookstores because they are too expensive and so

highly abridged that they're awful and they aren't the same book.

You can also download a lot of audio books from the library that will play

on your computer or digital player (but not IPOD in most cases). These

again are free. If your local library doesn't have this service there are

other libraries that do if you have one of their library cards and you don't

have to be a city resident to get one in most cases. I have lots of library

cards (Los Angeles city, Los Angeles county and Glendale/Pasadena)

The Library of Congress has links to sites for audio books/material for the

blind at: http://www.loc.gov/nls/ Again this is a free service. My mother

has used it for years. She's also a Book on Tape listener but she gets

ticked off that it takes so long to get through a book. If she could still

read she'd finish books in 1/3 the time or less.

Mostly I am reading the required articles for my upcoming class, which

starts Tuesday. I am also reading " The Water is Wide, " by Pat Conroy. I

saw the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie version. A group of us at work are

going to discuss this book when school starts again. I'm looking forward to

it--we will have regular meetings to drink coffee, etc., have snacks, and

discuss books. As someone who absolutely loves to read, I hate that I just

don't have much time for it lately. I definitely need to make more time.

I just finished Kitty and the Midnight Hour...can't remember the

author but it was a great book...about a werewolf named Kitty (haha)

and her radio call-in show....

Also just finished Micah, by Laurell K Hamilton...which is kind of an

in-between book...a shorter novel between her last one and her new one

that just fills you in on what happens in the meantime. Vampires,

shapeshifters, necromancers, etc.
