met the surgeon...good news?

Hi everyone. I joined awhile back, and finally met the breast

surgeon yesterday. I found a lump in July, and my pcp sent me for

mammo and sono, but both showed no abnormalities. I've had clear

water like discharge, tenderness, and recently slight swelling and

soreness under the arm. My nipple has a dimple when I lay down and

creases as well. I found the lump in July, and finally went to the

doc in oct, and finally met surgeon yesterday, so it's been quite

the emotional roller coaster.

The surgeon did not seem concerned at all with my lump. She said

I'mjust lumpy and was going to send me on my way. She did not find

the lump, I had to show her where it was. I asked if she'd be

willing to remove it just in case and she agreed. I cried like a

big baby just to hear the 'expert' say it's nothing, but I'm still a

little uneasy about the whole experience. Why did she not biopsy?

As far as the discharge, she squeezed the nipple and was only able

to get a very small drop of milk. Since she couldn't get anything

else, she said I should go straight to her office the next time it

happens so she can look which duct it's coming from? (I live 40

miles away and don't drive...). It's usually such a small amount,

it leaves about a pea size amount of wetness on my shirt when it

happens. I asked if it would be ok if my husband could look after

it happens and tell her which duct it comes from and she said that

would be great. (I'm visually impaired so it's something I can't

see). Once she knows which duct it's coming from, she'll schedule

surgery to remove the duct. This seems so weird. Does she not

believe me? are there not tests she can do? Is she not concerned?

At this point I'm thinking I should just wait another six months to

see if it's still happening and then go back. I mean, if husband

and I can't find out which duct. :( I stopped breast feeding 16

months ago, so maybe I'm lactating. It's just that it happens any

ole time and 4-5 times a week.

And on another note, it was cold so when I laid down the crease and

dimple didn't show up. I told her when I'm not cold is when it

happens. She brushed it off too.

Is she brushing me off because of my age? (33). Should I just take

her explanations and be done with it? I mean, she is willing to

remove the lump. Sigh.

Anyway, I suppose she's the 'expert', sh she should know what she's

feeling. Thanks for all the support here and for reading. Happy

holidays to all of you.

I would not let it go another 6 months. I would go for a second opinion. I would

look for a breast specialist. You can get breast cancer at 33 and even younger.

It may be nothing, but I personally wouldn't let it go. I will keep you in my

prayers.

Hi ,

The lump may be nothing, but you don't want to have to wait 6 months to

find out. The radiologist can do a needle aspiration which is an

in-office, non-surgical procedure. The fact that you have some abnormal

symptoms (dimple, soreness) just seems to warrant that it should be more

aggressively investigated, if only to give you peace of mind.

I agree with nne to look for a 2nd opinion.

take care,

Ty nne. I'm just curious. She's a breast surgeon. IS that

different than a breast specialist? Also, isn't there some way for

her to figure out which duct it is? I feel lost here. TIA.

Thx . I am scheduled for a lumpectomy on Jan 12th. I had to

request it. I'm really surprised she did not want to biopsy. I will

mention my concerns to her on Jan 12 and let her know I plan on getting

a second opinion. She actaully acted as though I was wasting her

time...I should just be glad she's willing to remove the darn thing.

I think a breast surgeon and specialist would be pretty much the same. I still

would go for a second opinion. You might even want to contact an oncologist to

see what he/she might have to say. I don't know if there is a woay for her to

figure out which duct it is. Maybe one of the other ladies can answer that for

you.

- Greetings from another Texan. After my surgery, I found out there

is a difference in a surgeon that does breast surgery (among other types)

and a true Breast Surgeon. I'm in a mid-size town with a cancer center

(their own bldg- not in hospital) and we do not have a true Breast Surgeon

here. We only have General Surgery people. Onc said one would have to go

to Dallas (closest big town) for a specialist in breast surgery. I found

this out after my surgeon kinda messed me up and she knows it. She said she

would refer me to Plastic Surgeon to fix!!! We do have ONE of those in

town. Of course yours is " willing " to do the surgery! More money in her

pocket!!! But, you should check around to see if someone knows how good a

surgeon she is! After my surgery, I found out my surgeon had at least one

lawsuit against her. All doctors are not experts. Some are even dangerous!

Ask around at cancer treatment place or hospitals to see if they could

give you a reference to a Dr that knows what they're doing. I would

definitely back away from this Dr you've been going to.

TY Norma. So far I have heard good things about my doc...she's a

breast surgeon at the and White hospital in Temple. I'm thinking

I may go to Austin or Dallas. I'm pondering and talking over my

options with friends and family. Sorry to hear things didn't go so

well for you. I hope you've found a good doctor in the meantime and

things work out with the reconstruction.

I also agree. 10 months before I found out about the cancer, a specialist told

me I didn't have anything and that I was too concerned. Well, I was right on

being concerned.

So, if you are not satisfied with the diagnostic, go get a second opinion. She

is probably right and you are fine, but it is good to be sure. Don't wait and

get you peace of mind.
