Viagra Helps Baby's Medical Condition

It's known as the little blue pill normally given to men but now it's being

called the miracle pill for saving one baby's life. It's also helping an East

Texas infant's chance of survival. We're hearing about it for the first time

doctors using Viagra to treat babies with serious medical conditions.

In London, Louis Goodfellow was born premature. He had a heart defect and a

collapsed lung. Then, just when doctors and Louis' mom thought he was on the

brink of death. They tried their last option: Viagra. Remarkably, the little

blue pill opened up Louis' tiny blood vessels in his lungs and helped him

breathe. And because of that he's doing well. We have also learned of an East

Texas baby- a baby girl- also on Viagra to save her little life. KLTV spoke with

the family about this unusual use for this popular medication.

" She actually has to take Viagra, which is not common for an 8 month old girl, "

says Graham, Mikayla's father. Mikayla

Graham of Bullard has to take Viagra 3 times a day after undergoing open heart

surgery in December for a congenital heart defect.

" She acquired pulmonary hypertension from her heart having to overwork. The

Viagra, how it works is it increases your blood flow and lowers her high blood

pressure in her lungs. That high blood pressure is why they were only giving

her a small chance of making it through. They didn't know how that was going

to react so they put her on the Viagra to lower that activity and the blood

pressure, " says .

Mikayla was at children's hospital in Dallas for three and a half weeks. " Right

now, we are looking at about $750,000 to 1 million dollars going to a be billed

to an insurance company. We don't know how much we are going to have to pay out

of pocket but if you look at 20% that is still a lot of money, " says .

Now those medical bills and Viagra prescriptions are adding up. The Viagra is

not covered by insurance because it has not been approved for a baby's medical

condition. However, Mikayla is proof... the miracle pill is working... In

another way than it was intended.

" She is a miracle baby, " says . The town of Bullard is hosting a

fundraiser lunch on Sunday to help pay for Mikayla's medical bills and

prescriptions. The event is from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the First Methodist

Church in Bullard. Donations will also be accepted at Texas National Bank in

Bullard.

the underlying nitric oxide physiology)...Viagra was originally developed to

improve blood flow by dilating various systems, and only incidently gained fame

in treating erectile dysfunction as a interesting side effect of the primary

treatment...

Most things like this are " accidents " take Post-it-Notes, the glue that

makes a Post-it-Note do what it does was a " mistake " , 3M of course made office

supply history with that " mistake "

Pulmonary HTN. When I worked in a Medical Office for a while, I cared

for a few pedi patients on Viagra for this condition, and it truly

worked wonders!!!

It's so interesting to see these types of stories, with medications

being used for alternative means!

Per Wickstrom, MD, FACOG, my perinatal conferee...no current

indications in the literature for giving Viagra, etc., to the mother, and no

indication of research in the prenatal use of nitric oxide enhancers at the

recent

perinatal conference.

With regard to " Post-it Notes " the story is that upper management did

everything in its power to make sure that the product never got to market. It

was

only by accident that it happened, in spite of the efforts of management types

to suppress it.

I have heard that aspect as well. Also of note in the world of 3M is a story

related to firefighting foam. 3M had at one time not long ago what was by

and far (arguably perhaps?) the best firefighting foam in the world overall

market wise and in my considered opinion it had the best foams in terms of

putting and keeping a flammable liquids fire, Yet today they are out of that

business entirely today. Why? Simple really, the reason that their foam was so

good was it's blend and in particular the use of fluorinated halogens. Now as

everyone on this list will undoubtedly know Fluorine and it's compounds are

BAD ACTORS in terms of human interface and well they are known to be very bad

actors over the long term in the vein of environmental and human

contamination. The potential threat to the " environment " is the stated reason

for 3M

walking away from a billion dollars market in the case of firefighting foam.

One

could of course argue that the air pollution from un-extinguished fires and

re-ignitions is as bad for the environment but that's another argument for

another list.

Umm, Louis, Chill!

We all know that Industry Knows Best. And if Industry does not Know Best,

Our Government Knows Best.

Our world only began to improve when common sense was finally outlawed (see,

The Common Sense Prevention Act of 1998, PL 102-67), enacted by Congress after

somebody said that people were illegally using common sense on a daily basis.

Thankfully, this trend toward common sense was knipped in the bud, and

nonsensical behaviour was restored to all governmental agencies and business

entities.
