Guest guest
Has anyone ever experienced a severe worsening in reflux after getting their g-button? Tate has had his a week and a half and we are now to the point of having to do continuous feeding. At first we had to just cut back a bit on his volume of each bolus, then cut back some more, then lengthen the time for each bolus, then lengthen the time more. Now we are trying to go to continuous. Something we've never had to do. He's even been throwing up with that tonite! I spoke to his surgeon a couple of days ago and he said that this happens w/ the mick-ey because of the balloon of water taking up space in the stomach. We took a little out(don't want to do too much for fear of it coming out) and we've tried thickening his milk w/ a bit of cereal. Still throwing up. It's very scary because he doesn't do well w/ the throwing up. We know he aspirates( have seen it on a swallow study) so we hate to see him doing this. He freaks out each time it happens. HIs surgeon felt like it could hopefully get better over time, otherwise we need to do some more testing etc. It just seems like if anything it's getting worse! Just wondered if anyone had any experience w/ this. Peyton did not have a bit of trouble with his(he got a Bard at first though). You'd think I wouldn't have to be having " new " problems spring up the second time around but Tate is not disappointing us. Jeesh! Guest guest
Corrie, I'm so sorry to hear of Tate's reflux. In our case, Kendra's reflux increased following the dilation of her trachea and getting a stomach tube. It became worse and worse until she got a fundoplication at age 6 months. And even following the fundoplication we had to watch for reflux and aspirations. Finally at one year of age much of it improved dramatically. I mentioned in the e-mail I just wrote to Flo about a book called " Why Stomach Acid is Good For You " . It details in great length that reflux, contrary to popular wisdom, may well be the result of too little acid as opposed to too much. The book describes the effect on reflux of many common types of antacids. The book is not generally in favor of them. I find it important to read what I can on a subject and this one really is startling. I don't know if you would tend to agree or not, but at any rate you may find it of interest to read. Best wishes, :-) reflux after g-button placement Has anyone ever experienced a severe worsening in reflux after getting their g-button? Guest guest
Corrie, Does Tate have a Nissen done too, or did they just put the g-tube in the last time around? The Nissen takes up a lot of stomach space as well. And he doesn't have any other signs of something like a viral or bacterial infection brewing (no fever, acting sick)? On the Feeding List-serve, there are several parents who deal with lots of vomiting. One thing I have read they do to " prevent " it is that they remove some of the stomach contents when the kid starts to gag--this alleviates the need enough to stop it. Then they slowly put the food back in. I hope that this resolves sooner instead of later. Guest guest
We had to go back and forth for awhile until Kennedy could really handle things - we had to adjust, go back to continuous when necessary and then get the boluses worked out over a long time. It was worth it though to keep the fundo intact and work our way up to the boluses. Hope the throwing up stops soon - scary when you've had a fundo! > > Has anyone ever experienced a severe worsening in reflux after getting > their g-button? Guest guest
, We actually do not have a fundo. Didn't think we needed one! He had a little reflux before the g-button, but nothing we couldn't control w/ modifications like doing his bolus over longer periods of time, remaining upright for a while after a feed, etc. Now, we have gone to continuous on the lowest rate/amount possible and we're still spitting up! , the theory of low stomach acid makes sense to me. If you're throwing up a lot wouldn't the acid be low due to losing it w/ each throw up? And low acid would make for slower digestion would it not? Just me guessing. I've just always had a theory w/ all my kids that once you have a reflux episode they seem to snowball from there. Conversely, the longer you can go w/ out one(possibly giving more time for the acid to build back up) the better you can come out of a reflux cycle(which is what I think my kids have-cycles, sometimes it's not even present and others, especially right now, majorly present) I'm going to have to look that book up. It's just so frustrating to be developing " new " problems!! Guest guest
My son has had THE worst reflux ever. He is almost 10 now. When he was born he wasn't able to eat so they put in a g-tube without the fundo first. I think, looking back, he had really bad reflux initially, but you wouldn't know it because he wasn't throwing up, but he was also on a ventilator. Anyway, when they put the tube in the nurses would bolus him and everything would come up. His respitory status would get worse after a feeding. So we went to continuous with no luck. After 3 weeks of this, he ended up with double pneumonia and in the ICU for 2 months without getting any food. They couldn't feed him because when he got fed it would be aspirated right into the lungs. He nearly died from this. After 4 weeks of letting him recover and breathing was a bit better, but still no where great, they operated and did the fundo. It was no picnic after that either. My son has never been able to take a large amount of food at once, he tops off at around 6 ounces, even today. He needs small frequent meals. Of course he has an unusable 2/3 of his stomach from the fundo. My suggestion would be to contact the GI and the surgeon and let them know what is going on and try heavy anti-reflux meds first. If he is already on something, he may need a lot more. Good luck, keep us posted. I feel for you as this is probably my son's worst problem. He is just starting to eat by mouth but it is very hard and progressing very slowly. He has made baby steps with feeding over the last 9 years, but is working on it and is getting there. Guest guest
Corrie, Yes, I think the low acid could definitely slow down the process a lot. Food needs a certain amount of acid to digest properly. I think the lack of digesting the food could lead to the vomiting also. There is controversy over this topic. But the theories and information makes a lot of sense to me as well. Hoping you find good solutions very soon, :-) Re: reflux after g-button placement , We actually do not have a fundo.
