Guest guest
This question is not being asked to judge or criticize anyone. How much time do you spend a day thinking about food and preparing food. How much time do you spend a day on diabetes. This can be research, group emails, etc. I know that when I constantly read messages about food or read cookbooks, I eat more. When I'm reading about gardening, I want to get outside and play in dirt. When I'm shopping or doing hobbies, I don't think of food. hugs Eunice - I eat to live, not live to eat
Guest guest
Well, I'm not the one with diabetes..it's my teenage son. But he spends very little time each day thinking about diabetes as far as I can tell. He follows his 'rules' on how many carbs to have at bkfst, lunch, dinner and snacks. He will ask how much I think a certain food is (meaning how many carb servings). He does his testing and sometimes remembers to tell me and my husband what the numbers are and he takes his insulin. I'm the one that reads these emails to find info that might be useful. And I'm the one that read 2-3 books on diabetes when he was first diagnosed. I tell him interesting things that I think he might be useful and I would like him to read more before he moves out and goes to college in 2 years but I'm not going to push it right now. At first, we spent aloooooot of time figuring out the foods and the amount of carbs in them but now we mostly estimate..and he eat pretty much the same thing for bkfst and lunches most days. BTW, we went for his check up recently and his A1C was 6.4!! We don't know what it was in October when he was diagnosed but his BG reading at 5 pm that day was 501!!! Guest guest
First of all, I haven't had dependable transportation since Feb, so I've gone back to the way I was raised - put away as much as possible & make it last - thank goodness I splurged on a new freezer a couple of years ago! I try to spend as little time as possible dealing with food - I still love to cook, but have picky kids, and don't care to cook for just myself......but I buy frozen fish (been getting talipa(sp?)) & shell fish on sale, beef that I can freeze in serving size portions & chicken fillets; I also buy frozen veggies, prep time is so much easier than fresh & they won't go bad either. I am an herb & spice addict, have an entire cupboard just for herbs & spices. I'll spend more time deciding which seasoning to use So meals are easy - a chunk of meat grilled, stir-fried or steamed, whichever bag of veggies my hand lands on in the freezer, and fresh salads. I'm trying to experiment with pickles or relishes made from different veggies that are low salt/low sugar, but not having too much luck yet. The other thing I do that helps is when I have time I will cook several lbs of meat then freeze in small amounts - hamberger especially - I'll watch the sales for the big family packs & cook the entire amount. that way it's ready to go much faster for taco salads & what not. I'll do chickens the same way, then just thaw a portion to toss onto a salad or put in a wrap. I am the same with the cookbooks & the gardening (my downfall is the home improvement shows!) - the one makes me fat, the other is making me broke (a new yard to be put in & carpets need replaced & windows need new trim & the exterior needs painted this year.....does it ever end? -lol-) Hobbies have fallen by the wayside - trying to get a new business off the ground - worse than having babies, there is regulations for this and approvals! beth > How much time spent thinking/preparing > foods/diabetes > > > This question is not being asked to judge or criticize anyone. > > How much time do you spend a day thinking about food and preparing food. > > How much time do you spend a day on diabetes. Guest guest
I spend a lot of time thinking about food and I spend a lot of time reading on lc websites. We eat fish 3 times aweek. Because my sugars were so high a couple of months ago and I am good and scared I have gone back to ordering lc products on the internet and making my own sugarfree barbeque and terriyaki sauce. I seem to have to go to the store almost every day mostly cause dh likes his grapefruit and is eating it faster than I can replenish (bought him two bags of it today that should hold him) We generally eat out on the weekends and I cook during the week. My husband is an extremely picky eater so figuring out what we both will and can eat takes a lot of time. I also like to go to mass everyday at noon so I have to eat lunch than at around 11:00 and than I go shopping after church so I must take snacks with me because it will be 3 hours before I am home again leave at 11 and get home around 3 and finding lc takeout is the pits hey maybe we should start a thread on lc fast food. Menu looks like this shrimp terriyaki, some kind of crockpot chicken for me and grill cheese for dh who hates chicken, left over chicken for lunches lol, tilipia, left over chicken again, salmon, tuna salad for me and scrambled eggs for dh who hates tuna. Today I had some of the frozen salad shrimp with mayo and lawrys salt for lunch and it was sooo good am gonna do that again. Veggies are cold slaw made with package cabbage, frozen veggies for stir fry, fresh cooked asparagus, and frozen green beans or broccoli. Raw veggies besides the cabbage is tomatoes. Fruit strawberries and blueberries for me grapefruit for dh. Breakfast is eggs, peanut butter toast, lc cracker with cream cheese. Ok I think that takes care of it. Am reading lc websites for snack and desert ideas. Having to eat every 3 hours is the worse part I feel like I am a slave to food soometimes. sharon
Guest guest
Hi, I spend a few minutes before every meal thinking about diabetes and food and also about an hour and a half a week working out meal plans and buying groceries. I have been diabetic for 11 years and by now I pretty much know what I can eat and what I need to avoid. When I was first dxed it was a very consuming process. I had to stay focused all the time but now it is like second nature. I check my bgs and take the appropriate meds before meals and at bedtime. I record the bgs and write down my meals in my log book. This is more for my doctor than for me but I do find it helpful in assessing the trends of my bgs and the light it sheds on those numbers when the kind of food I've been eating is added in. If something happens and I start spiking a high bg or my A1C comes back high then I stop and reevaluate and adjust my routine accordingly. So far so good. My last A1C was 4.6. I feel I have accepted thi disease as part of my life and that I have things pretty well under control. That came with time and the advice of a good doctor plus some pretty miraculous medication. Guest guest
Hi, I spend a lot of time thinking about my diabetes because it has been out of control for quite sometime now. In the last year I have been seriously sick a good bit of the time heavy meds. and such which always throw my bsg off. When this happens I have to go on insulin in addition to my pills. Right now even with the insulin isn't bringing things into line very well. That's why I have sought out support.I am very depressed about all this.My Dr. agreed finding a support group might help, so here I am. Just reading the posts has encouraged me some, so thanks to the one who started this group and those that sustain it. Prior to six months ago my biggest problem with the diabetes was remembering to eat all the meals on my meal plan. I wouldn't get hungry and didn't like thinking about food.I still don't like thinking about food but I get hungry now. Even when I am full. I still want to eat. This is new for me and hard to handle. DH idea is that treats are good for me and often brings them home. He worries alot about low bsg.and me having quick sugar around. Up till 6 months ago I could ignore the snacks. Now it is really difficult. I have been a diabetic for 14 yrs., type II. it rules my life. Cat

Guest guest
The most I think about my food and diabetes is when I am trying to figure out what to get at the grocery store, and what I am cooking for dinner or lunch. We eat healthy here in my house. Whole grains, whole wheat pasta, brown rice... lots of veggies, and lean meats. On occasion we eat pizza or eat out. My daughter's favorite snack is a can of green beans. We grow our own beef. We have it ground at 7% fat or less. For the most part, my family is heathy =) Angelia in OR
Guest guest
I think that it's awsome too! Even when we move into town (we are currently looking) I will be able to have a few chickens, and my parents raise beef naturaly as well, and I can always buy a half or quarter of beef from them, and have it processed however I want! Great stuff =) I love having a healthy family.
