Tom,

As I pointed out in another post, this system seems to work best in

unexposed (essentially virgin) females...I'll be discussing the situation with

my dau

about her 13 yo dau when I see them next week.

I've delivered too many babies to 13 yos and seen too many sexually active

11 and 12 yos to believe that *any* nubile female is 'safe' despite her

parents' best efforts.

item a: I said nothing about religious reasons...the rise of male

circumcision in this country was NOT due to Jewish Doctors, but to a misguided

stand by

the AMA and the Pediatricians, based on poorly constructed case studies

comparing cervical cancer rates between French Nuns, French Peasant women and

female partners of circumcised men (at that time, mostly Jewish and, IIRC,

wasn't even done here in the US!). The report concluded that the virginal nuns

had

the lowest rate of cervical cancer, the partners of circumcised men did

almost as well, and the peasant women had rates of cervical cancer exceeding

that

of the barrios and ghettos of today.

It turns out that circumcision only makes it easier to maintain proper

hygiene, and makes it more obvious when a man has a significant problem...and

that

circumcision, in and of itself is not a good way to prevent cervical cancer.

Item b: The Mohel will be disappointed...

I'll have to TUCK in shortly to head to work...I'm surprised that no one has

commented on the cost factors I pointed out earlier...I'd rather not CUT it

SHORT, but the bills have to be paid...

Here's what I said earlier about the costs:

Cost factors from a commercial web site:

Gardasil 10 pack $1370 $137 per dose

MMR II 10 pack $560 $56 per dose

ProQuad (MMR plus Varivax)

10 pack $1555 $155 per dose

Zostavax 10 pack $1652 $165 per dose

other, older vaccine sets are quite a bit cheaper...and often have more than

one ultimate source.

So the cost to the state is less than half of the $300 plus initially

indicated...and Gardasil is not even the most expensive recommended vaccine.

Lockhart, Luling, Elgin, and are all overrated for BBQ and Lubbock is

underrated. No beans in the chili. As for Tex-Mex, Austin still has the best

You've obviously never had the BBQ from Memphis, Tennessee (opposite end

from my home of Knoxville). You don't think Elvis and ny Cash got so

talented eating hamburgers, do you? Beside, if not for Sam Houston and

Crockett, you'd be a Mexican citizen - and I've been a naturalized

Texan longer than you've been alive.

Texas BBQ is PRETTY good, though.

Actually, I lived in Memphis for a few years as a kid. A great evening can be

had chowing down on Memphis dry rub ribs from the Rendevoux in downtown Memphis.

(Actually, at the risk of being a heretic in two states, I prefer Texas BBQ

brisket, but Tennessee ribs.)

Cervical Cancer may not be a sexually transmitted disease and we all know HPV

is, but cervcal cancer is a major killer of women even though it can be

prevented through regular exams, etc.. we all know that. So if we prevent HPV

will we prevent ALL cases of cervical cancer, probaably not but they may be

reduced significantly. It is not a matter of a girl or woman being sexually

promiscuous either, what if she is raped, that happens more often than we know.

I don't disagree with the vaccine being givenn to pubexcent girls but I do think

it should be a decision made between the girl, her parents, and her doctor, kids

these days know a lot more about sex and sexually transmitted diseases than we

give them credit for, even if it is not discussed in the home. I have two

daughters, ages 22 and 18, one in the Navy and one who will be starting college

in the fall. I will advise both of my girls to get this vaccine after some more

research. It is better to be safe than sorry. Again

not because they are promiscuos or may be sexually active, but just in case

there is an act of violence and they get raped which they have no control over,

they would still be protected. We all know Merck is going to make a lot of money

but let's be informed about what we are advising before we really jump on this

bandwagon.
