Jack got a button...and then lost it.

On Monday Jack went to the pediatric surgeon and I asked that they replace his

tube because it was getting very sticky and gross from all the tape. They came

back in with a button! I was so excited! Apparently the foley that Jack had

didn't have a balloon on the end because the surgeon just grabbed the tube and

yanked it out. Between that and watching them put the button in I almost passed

out! I got very cold and sweaty and had to sit down and lay my head down on the

table! I couldn't believe it! I've seen a lot worse than that in the NICU!

What's wrong with me?

Anyway, we were so excited! The next morning Jack woke up crying like normal at

5am and when I went to get him he was soaked from head to toe. I first thought

his diaper came off and then my brain went to his tube. I ripped open his pjs

and sure enough there was his button laying right beside him. I started

freaking out and screaming at my husband (poor guy). The best we can figure it

came out between 11pm and 1am because the meds we gave him at 1 were stained all

over his pjs. We had to get in the car and drive to Syracuse because our

hospital told us there wasn't anything they could do. By the time we got there

they could only get an 8 foley in when he had a 12. Then we had to wait an hour

in the er for the peds surgeon's clinic to open. Finally we got there and they

worked on dialating the hole for almost 2 hours. We were able to get a 12 tube

in! We realized that the surgeon only filled the balloon with 1cc of water.

Jack probably coughed it out with only

1cc in there! Anyway, We're getting a new button next week. We'll be sure to

fill it with more than 1cc!!!

Chrystal, It is so funny that we wnt through relatively the same thing so close

together. I really freaked out and probably shouldn't have but They didn't give

me anything to stick in the hole!!! I think when something comes out of our

child and leaves a gaping hole we all have the right to get freaked out!!!!!

I would make sure you have a 8, 10, and 12 Foley catheters on hand--that way you

will have something to stick in the hole if you can't deflate the balloon and

get the button back in. We've made several trips to our Children's Hospital for

button reinsertion (my son's stoma used to shrink down in a matter of seconds!).

(mom to Evan, 18 months, now with a 16 french MIC-Key at my

request--seems to have helped stop stoma shrinkage!)

Do you have an extra at home should this happen again? I try and keep at least

one more. The balloon will weaken after time...I think I replace Max's about

every month or so. You will get so comfortable with it , trust me. I

remember thinking it seemed so complicated and invasive, but now I don't even

think twice about it. I have had to do it in the middle of the night before and

I just used the night light and was done in just a few minutes.

hmmn... you aren't pregnant are you?

I agree that if your child has a g-tube or button, it is a very good idea to

keep an extra one at home and to learn how to take out the old one and put in

the new one yourself. . Have a doctor or nurse show you next time...it is not

difficult. Also take the extra with you if you are traveling. My experience at

emergency rooms is that they do not have the appropriate tubes or buttons in

stock, and as easy as it is, the staff there isn't familiar with how to put them

in. Also, time works against you since the hole starts to close up, making

insertion more difficult.

One other factor we have noticed is that if Danny is crying and upset, the

muscles tighten up and it is hard to get the tube into the hole. So it is much

easier if he is asleep, or if we can do it quickly before he gets upset.

LOL I have to laugh when I read about the small amount of water in the button

cause they sent home with ten ccs in his first button and with

in a half an hour of starting his pump up he was vomiting all over the place

he could only handle FIVE ccs in the balloon .......Maybe they do remember my

kid??
