Guest guest
OK.....boys and girls... I got my 1st TDH EMT certification in 1980 on an 8x10 certificate. I got my 1st TDH paramedic certificate in 1983 on an 8x10 certificate. I got my 1985, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003 TDH paramedic certificates on 8x10. - All were written in a nice font and signed by the bureau chief. Even all of my Rocco V. Morando signed NR certificates were 8x10, when I was NR and belonged to the 'DARKSIDE'. Yesterday I got this envelop in the mail with a low mil paper wallet card for my 2007 paramedic certificate. Have we sunk down to level of gas pumps???? Where's the pride, where's the dignity in an apologetic wallet card???? How are paramedics supposed to update their 'I love me wall' and impress the ladies? I want my 8x10, signed by Maxie... if not maybe he'll sign my t-shirt. -mikey

Guest guest
Mikey, That is all you get now. Last year when I recerted I too was disappointed with the cheap wallet card. The budget strikes again if I had to point a finger at the lack of an 8 x10 certificate. I sure it was part of the 10% all departments were required to cut to meet the new budget last year. I wish they would give us an option for a one time download a pdf document of the 8x10 that we could print out on nice paper when we do the recertification. Maxie is this possible?? Guest guest
I just re-licensed and I thought the wallet size was pretty poor in quality. If a wallet size is all your going to get someone should at least try and put a little time and effort into the design that will be printed. Maxie go have them print one off for you and take a look for yourself. I agree with the others that a 8x10 would be nice along with a wallet size. We are not getting what we pay for that is for sure. Guest guest
Our secretary's son renewed his EMT-Basic certification and he too got the cheap looking wallet card. But to make it even more ugly, the U. S. Postal system had cancelled the mail and his wallet card had a red line across it with the postmark and date of mailing on it. It almost made the card unreadable. I agree, I think that an 8X10 certificate is much more professional and appreciated. I just re-licensed and I thought the wallet size was pretty poor in quality. Guest guest
The last time this came up I had the opportunity to criticize the card, which is of poor quality, and compare it to TCLEOSE. In fairness, I should tell you that things have changed. While TCLEOSE still issues a MUCH nicer " initial certification " card for free when you pass the exam, they also now offer a MUCH nicer heavy- plastic DL-type card with a photo, level of certification and type (jailer, peace officer, etc.), name and personnel ID (state). The catch? It's voluntary, and it costs $25 (one-time fee). So yes, it looks like the budget strikes again, but I would like to see DSHS produce a higher-quality wallet card initially - that could certainly be done at the same or close to the cost of the current scrap of paper we get. As for the 8x10, while I know Mike was tongue-in-cheek, I can say that beyond my FIRST one and my original EMT from UT Southwestern (what a NICE certificate), I've never found a use for the others. I wouldn't be disappointed to see those go away with re-certs. Mike :/ > I just re-licensed and I thought the wallet size was pretty poor in > quality. Guest guest
My voter registration card is better quality than the new EMS wallet card! And yes you're right it was the budget cuts along with the breakup of the old BEM that caused us to get the cheap looking cards. Unless something changed since I left DSHS in 03 the License and Certification people don't answer to people like Maxie and Steve on procedural issues. The L & C people print cards for many various DSHS divisions and I understand that all divisions are getting only wallet cards. The cost of our certifications/licenses has gone up and the quality of the cards has gone down along with axing the 8X10. Guest guest
Mike, What did you pay for your EMD course? I'm sure you paid more than enough to finance a nice plastic card. Guest guest
I find it interesting that when I took my EMD course it was only 3 days long, and I got a hard plastic card for 2 years......they couldn't possibly have more certificants in EMD than we do EMS in all of TX, could they? Guest guest
Mike: Let's summarize: EMD course: $275 for a cheesy, virtually worthless course, but a nice plastic card. (I have taken it, and it WAS cheesy). State certification: $126 for four year certification that allows you to work anywhere in the State of Texas, but gives a cheesy cert card. What's the problem? Guest guest
No Mike...but NAEMD got 100% of the dollars you paid for the EMD Course...and the cost of that card was figured into the dollars you paid...BTW, I am assuming you paid the card issuing company the money for the course and card.... Now, state certifications...you pay DSHS your $126....they get about $75 dollars of that with the remainder going into a " dedicated " fund that cannot be touched by DSHS or by the Legislature. This $75 pays for the staff to handle all certifications as well as many other EMS functions in DSHS....then from my understanding....the remaining money sits in a dedicated fund for several years with all the other dedicated EMS funds that aren't spent by DSHS....until some legislation is passed quietly that " empties " this fund and it all starts over.... Where does the money go when emptied? Who knows? What's in the bottom of the bottomless pit? Dudley Re: Where's my 8x10 I just re-licensed and I thought the wallet size was pretty poor in quality.
