Amy:

That is so great! It is good to hear Max is doing so well. I am sure

you're VERY proud of your handsome little man. Sorry the divorce is

still going on. That must be VERY frustrating!

just keep remembering what he CAN do and hope at some point he can do it all!!

Mighty Max Update

Hello everyone!

I haven't posted about Mighty Max for several months so I thought I should

take a moment and brag about how amazing he has been doing lately! He truly is

making GREAT progress!

A few highlights include:

crawling (commando style) a lot and quite fast I must say when he is coming to

get me! :)

cruising some with furniture (love, love, love this...so grown up!)

kneeling

pulling to stand and sitting back down and back up again...

walking with me holding his hands (about 20 steps as of this weekend)

EATING (yes, EATING!!! approximately 16 ounces a day orally!!!! I am in shock

every day still about this!)

climbing up on me or over a couch cushion

waving hello / goodbye

clapping (that took forever to learn b/c he had such an aversion to his hands

being touched or his arms being moved)

giving high fives (as of this weekend....love, love, love this new trick!)

lots of motor skills, i.e. putting rings on the ring stand, putting things

in/out of a box, pulling apart (and somewhat putting back together) Mega Blocks,

etc.

I'm sure there is much more but those are some of the fun ones! Pretty cool,

right?

Despite all this incredible progress (can you tell how proud I am of my lil'

man!?!?!), we had his annual IEP last week and his developmental stage was quite

low (nine months across the board) and that was a little discouraging. Even

though you know your child is delayed, seeing the " score " can be frustrating. Oh

well...I know the old mantra... " Max is on his own timetable and he'll get there

when he gets there. " :)

Oh and on another note....two " logistical " developments include:

THE GOOD: Maxwell qualified and is now receiving the medical waiver so we have

nursing care and our medical expenses are cut dramatically. WOO HOO!!! This was

an amazing, incredible, wonderful accomplishment as of a few months ago!!! :) I

am still astonished that we got this. We didn't qualify on funds so they tried

him for the MIP (medically intensive program) and he qualified. What a true

blessing for our family.

THE BAD & THE UGLY: Divorce is STILL not final. We are waiting to hear from

the judge. I do know that my ex's proposed order included absolutely no spousal

support or medical expenses...even though he agreed that Max needs a full time

caregiver so I cannot work. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Hopefully soon the judge will tell

him that is absolutely not acceptable. We'll see!

Amy-

Wow, wow, wow! Max is doing so much! I remember that time in early

childhood when it seems like every day brings something new. It's so

exciting!

About the IEP and " across the board " developmental level. I know you know

not to let that bother you. But it's hard to resist thinking about it. Our

kids don't do anything " across the board " . They are forging ahead in one

thing while lagging behind in another, and the things that are ahead and

behind take turns switching places all the time. So there's no evaluating

and comparing to the way a typical kid grows and develops. The

professionals have to do those tests and put numbers to things because

that's just how it's done. But it has no relevance for us. So never mind.

Just never mind. Rejoice in all that is Max and know that no number or test

score or piece of paper can begin to quantify him!

Good luck on that nasty divorce stuff. Argh. I think of you often and hope

that things will be settled sooner rather than later. In the meantime, your

strength, optimism, and perseverance is awesome!

Amy and Max,

What fabulous news! I can just picture that little

man making his way around. Isn't it so great to watch

him get into what HE wants? I love it!

The developmental age thing can really get to me

sometimes, too. My latest perspective is to tell

myself, " Six months behind? Great... he still

qualifies for services!! "

I have to tell you that Vinny is totally into

the Tank Engine (as is my 3 year old, him first). We

were at the store not too long ago and they were both

allowed to pick out a train. Luca picked one and them

it was Vinny's turn. He literally picked one up,

looked at it, and them put it down. He repeated that

process again with another train. He wouldn't even

consider the green train I tried to offer him. But

then, he found it. He picked out this cool

bluish/purple train. His name is " Mighty Mack " and he

just loves it. It soooo makes me think of Max every

time he plays with it. I even catch myself calling

the train Mighty Max on occasion!!

Looking forward to meeting you in California!

Amy that is great :)

What a true
