I'm new here. I've been diabetic for 3 years and am an insulin

dependant type 2. I'm 26 years old and living in California at the

moment.

I have a problem. I don't usually talk about my weight but thats what

the problem is. When I found out I was diabetic, i was a size 20

trying to lose weight to join the navy. obviously the navy idea was

shot down. anyways when i started taking the insulin i shot up to a

22 and now im a 26 it's been about 3 years or so. A couple weeks ago,

i was out of insulin. I was out for about a month and i had lost

almost 10 pounds. I'm on novalin does anyone on that insulin have

any ideas what i can do? I eat salad for both break fast and lunch 5

days a week. there's not much i can do about what i eat so i don't

know. any ideas?

When I was diagnosed, I had dropped 20 lbs and frankly was too

skinny...but I was so proud to be that small (too bad it was the

diabetes that was slowly killing me)...JOKE!! HA HA! I went

straight to insulin when diagnosed and gained 30+ pounds. No one

told me I would gain weight from the insulin. Now, almost 4 years

later, I am back to my PRE-diabetes weight. First and foremost, you

can't NOT take your insulin to lose weight!! Have you thought about

seeing a Diabetic Nutritionist/Dietician? Most insurance plans cover

a visit...maybe that will help you work out a proper meal plan?

I am not sure about your direct question to Novolin, because I am not

familiar with that insulin...someone else on the list can better

answer to that...

Did you lose the weight just because you quit the insulin or you

changed something else? How is your BG control off of insulin? I'm

wondering if you had someone working with your insulin and food

amounts. When on insulin the only way to lose weight is to increase

activity levels. If you are taking doses larger than needed or a large

dose to begin with it could add extra weight. Maybe you were not on

the right dose or right food plan.

yes i'm on a huge dose. 78 units in the morning and 50 at night. A month

prior i had started eating salads for breakfast and lunch however exercising

on insulin simply helps me maintain my weight. I'm going to talk to my

doctor about seeing if i can survive without the insulin atleast until

august. I have a wedding in july i'd like to lose weight for.

I was out of my Actos as well when i was out of insulin and so my levels

were out of control however my doctor put me on glyburide which i can afford

so i have that to take twice a day.

i've seen a diatician and he didn't really help. I do not have insurance

because i can't find anyone to cover me. When i get married i will have it

but i'm not going to rush to the altar just for that. I'm just really at my

wits end on what to do.

You really do need to talk to your doctor. For the amount of insulin

you were on, I doubt whether you are having good control without it.

The important thing right now is not letting your BG get out of

control. Did the insulin actually work? How is the Glyburide working

for you? Drs sometimes have free samples to give as well.

Good, keep us posted. I hope it works too. It would be nice if that

worked instead of insulin.

I'm not your doctor (or anyone's doctor) but something that can happen when

insulin-dependent diabetics go off their insulin is weight loss. Girls with

type 1 have been known to quit taking insulin in order to lose weight for

prom, or whatever. Why is this bad? Well, the reason you are losing weight

is not because you are exercising more or improving your health; it's

because your body can no longer get glucose into your cells, so you are

relying on fat and protein stores in your body to survive. Where is the

glucose going? Into your blood stream. Have you been checking your blood

sugar lately? If not, please do. If this really is the reason for your

weight loss, your BG could be dangerously high.

Peggy,

Talk to your MD about Byetta. It is a new injection for type two diabetes. I was

on novolin injection before the Byetta and now I'm losing weight and I have good

control of my bgs. My last A1C was 4.6. I'm completely off the insulin. I do

take several oral meds though. I'm feeling better than I have in a long time.

Byetta was the right choice for me.

Blessings,
