Although it leaves a bad taste in mouth to say this, I actually agree with many of the points Gene made a few posts ago. There are many investigations that demonstrate improved performance following continuing education classes. However, there has been no definitive link established between continuing education and improved patient outcomes. I am not sure that the statement " . . . people who would do a distance learning program are the ones that are self-motivated . . . " is a true statement. I know many people who take on-line CE because it is the fastest way to accumulate the requisite number of hours. I don't have enough information to say that mandatory CE is " worthless, " but I think it reasonable to question if the concept should continue in its present form. Should EMS providers be allowed to gain all of their CE on-line? Even if the CE agency can't guarantee that the student is the one who finished the class? If not all, how much CE should be obtained on-line and how much should be " live? " Should we be required to have CE in certain categories? If CE doesn't improve patient outcomes, should we even be required to do it? I have more questions than answers. But I do know that the National Registry is not an instrument of the devil. Guest guest
As you all know we have completed the first month of NR Computer Base Testing (CBT) and I can honestly say I've waited 31 days for your comments. Let me began by saying I plan to have an official report of CBT at GETAC in February, it is early in the CBT process and I have been monitoring this process very closely. I appreciate your comments and support these past 6 months and I want you to know we are working to improve the process. I understand there are some changes you all would like to occur with the NR, I ask you all to be patient I am listening to your comments but like most things it takes time. If you are not involed in GETAC I encourage you to participate. If you can't attend the meetings please ask someone who attended to give you the information. Please forgive me because I may have misread some of your post and also know I am not attempting to defend the NR or fuel a debate just want to share some information. I dont have all of the statistics yet but there have been approximately 450 Texans sit for the NR exam and the over pass rate is approximately 75% the vast majority of these testers have been EMT-B. There are a couple paramedic programs beginning to test so I will have a better picture soon. If anyone took the paper and pencil exam and have not received their results I encourage them to contact the NR. I've been told that they will have graded all of these exams by February 1st which is in about 10 minutes from now. If you all experience any problems with NR please send me an e-mail at _maxie.bishop@..._ (mailto:maxie.bishop@...) and I will address your concerns and it will give me a better idea of any problems you all are facing. I will keep you all posted and as I said I will give a full report at GETAC. Sorry but my eyes are tired, again thanks for the support and feedback. Guest guest
I'll weigh in on this... I agree with most all of the points mentioned, however; I think that just maybe NR was/is concerned that in the early years a majority of EMS medical directors didn't require quarterly, semi-annually, or annual skills validations as the reason that they require a refresher course and hands on CE. Some medical directors still don't require any skills validations at all which means that a paramedic could theoretically practice medicine for his/her whole career without performing/practicing a critical skill (i.e. intubation, surgical cric. needle decompression etc.) Just my 0.2 cents worth...
