My boyfriend's 2 yr old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last

week. We are having a hard time finding info for my 7 yr old son to

understand diabetes and the changes we are making. (we all live

together). Does any one have any suggestions for helping siblings

understand and not feel resentment???

What is causing the resentment?

Maybe the hospital has some info? If I understand correctly, would this

'resentment' be the same if the younger child had any other type of

disease? I would bet a local childrens hospital might have programs that

would help.

Here are some links that might be helpful. I didn't see alot here

specifically for siblings but if you keep looking, there may be more info

for you.

We also have a book called " A First Book for Understanding Diabetes "

Actually, we have two.one from the Drs office and one from the insurance

company. Again, it's aimed more at kids with diabetes (though I found it

very informative for me) but it will help you explain what is happening in

terms your 7 yo should understand. If you want one, I can send it to you.

My 15 yo was dx in October and my 8 yo was pretty confused by it all at

first but once we got into the day to day aspects of it, he seems to have

figured it out (It's not contagious. His brother can still do normal things.

Etc) I think a key to helping your 7 yo deal with this is and not feel

resentful is to try to not change his life too drastically and to try to

give him attention and time w/o the 2 yo.

The first few weeks can be very stressful but with help and support, your

family should be able to work this new situation into your regular family

routines.

Are there specific problems you are having with the 7 yo? Or are you just

preparing yourself in case?

Hi Allsugr, get on the internet and type in children with diabetes......and

there's alot of great web sites to log on to. They also have a list of kids that

they can be pen pals with. Can't remember which site that one is, but if you go

through the sites....you'll come accross it. There's alot of useful sites. I

came across it due to having to do a presention for a class I had, it was on

children with diabetes. Hope some of the sites help you and with your 7 year old

son, and your boyfriends 2 year old son too. If possible get on the site where

your son can find a pen pal, it might help with the resentment and to understand

what he's going through also. Well, good luck with finding something to help

out. Just me, Anita

There is no resentment yet.........the doctors and psychologist at

the hospital told us to expect some resentment because the other is

getting more attention because of being sick. Also, my son has been

complaing about his stomach since this happened, partially I think

for attention and partially because he is upset about his " sibling "

being sick. All in all he is doing very well with this, I just don't

want it to become a problem. And as far as the little one goes he is

amazing!!! He is a real trooper through this!! :)
