Hi all,

I was diagnosed (type 2) 6 months ago and over that time have

managed to get my BG under control with exercise, weight loss (20

lbs so far!), diet, and drugs (Actos). Early on in this new

adventure (if you can call it that) we went to my favorite Thai

restaurant and, even though I didn't have any rice, my BG was way

too high afterwards and I thought I was going to have to give up

Thai food forever. :-(

Well, the past few weeks it has seemed easier to stay within my BG

limits so I decided to try Thai again tonight. We walked there and

back and I didn't have rice or my favorite dish (which is quite

sweet) and 2 hrs later my BG is well within range!!! I'm so

happy!!! I can have Thai food again.

I find restaurants tricky – they slip sugar into so many different

things. We don't eat out much (easier to control when I cook for

myself), but when we do we eat out I avoid anything with sauces

since you can never tell what's in them.

Anyway, I was so excited I had to share.

Thanks,

Congrats !! I love Pei Wei myself but havent been there in long time.

Anyway there is a rule on this list started by me that when you mention

weight loss you must tell what you were doing ie. carb counting, calories

etc. Of course I am kidding (dont kick me off Euncie) but would you please

share what has worked for you? I could not loose weight on actos so am very

curious as well.

It was a shock when I was diagnosed (as I'm sure it is for most

people) and I immediately radically changed my diet to get the

numbers down. I completely cut out ALL sugar (soda, cookies, candy,

etc.), rice, potatoes, pasta, bread, veggie like beats, corn, and

all fruit. For a few weeks all I was eating was meat, fish,

chicken, broccoli, spinach, asparagus, nuts for snacks, and water.

I ate 3 meals and 2 snacks and nothing after dinner and didn't feel

hungry, but I knew I was eating way too much fat for a healthy

diet. Then I slowly starting testing foods to see what I could add

to make my diet more balanced. I now eat oatmeal, strawberries,

apples, whole wheat bread (1 slice), milk, and other things. I work

full time so most of my testing new foods is done on the weekend.

Anyway, I lost the 20 lbs fairly steadily during the first 4 months,

but now it has leveled off. I'd like to lose a few more lbs, but

I'm more concerned about eating a healthy balance of different foods

for the long run.

The other change I made was to religiously exercise one hour EVERY

day. It started with walks after dinner with my husband. I found

if we started walking 1 hour after eating it had the biggest impact

on my BG. Then I added an exercise class 2 evenings / week. I

found a great class for 40+ (age) women that is not intimidating. I

look forward to the class and it's at the right energy level for me.

It takes quite a bit of work and organization for me to eat right

and exercise each day, but so far I've kept it up. Every now and

then it feels like a big old burden, but then I think it's better

than the alternative.
