No, I don't remember ever calling for meds by box color, but I have been known to ask for suture material by color code....seems that some of the techs and nurses have had trouble differentiating between the various types by name... ck S. Guest guest
I'll fess up. When a paramedic in the 70s we would listen to Dallas Bio-Tel on the EMS channels and, yes, it was common for the 2nd year internal medicine residents to instruct paramedics in the Dallas area to " administer 2 red boxes and 1 blue box " . The red box was sodium bicarbonate and the blue box was epinephrine. They would use continuous telemetry and the residents would call orders to the ambulance based upon the telemetry. Fortunately, things have changed a lot there. A lot of the resulted from a high-visibility error where a paramedic accidentally gave a whole gram of lidocaine IV push thinking it was dextrose. He effectively executed a man who was director of the Dallas Theatre center (or something similar). It was a nasty issue in the papers and was eventually blamed on the paramedics pending divorce and not the system. However, the system made some changes. The biggest change came when they moved away from internal medicine residents answering the radio. _____ From: texasems-l [mailto:texasems-l ] On Behalf Of lnmolino@...
