Guest guest
Hello, I am a paramedic who is considering working towards becoming a PA. I know there are several on this list and I was hoping a few of them would have a few minutes to e-mail directly and answer a few questions. Thanks, mayfieldr@... Guest guest
Is there any way that you could ask some of your questions online? I'm interested in becoming a PA, but I don't even know what questions I should ask. The only thing I know to ask is where are the best schools, and how long does school take? I'm in the medic course at Temple College right now. Are there any classes that I should consider taking to help out with that later? Should I get my RN before the PA? Thanks! PA school has a great appeal for the quicker time of school & no residency plus easier hours but medical school looks good for the extra prestige, money, and since PA students go thru the same classes as med students (from what I hear), why not do an extra year or two of lecture? from my perspective (I was one of the 'older students' at 27 when I entered medical school)- PA programs may be as hard to get into, but they are much shorter (around half the time needed to complete an MD/DO program with residency when you factor in total time under instruction (11 or more years for the physician and six or less for the PA including undergrad course work), and a much lower debt load. Down side is that they 'only' pay around 80-100 K per year. Depending on the state you work in, you may have a relatively independent practice with minimal physician oversight. (other states, like Louisiana, only allow the PA to work if their supervision physician is 'on the premises', however.) The flip side is that you often have 9 to 5 hours, paid holidays/vacation/time off, employee status with benefits (which adds the equivalent of another 20K to 30K per year), and little or no call...Physicians, even in this day and age, also find themselves burdened with paperwork that most PAs don't need to worry about. For someone with a BSN, then the MSN/NP/CRNA/CNMW (certified Nurse MidWife) programs are more feasible, as they are only three more years with (usually one year) of closely proctored collaboration before becoming independently licensed. Situation is that you get to do 90% or more of the fun stuff, with a much smaller debt load, and far more time off than most docs...and currently, primary care NP/PAs net up to 70% or more of what a doc in a similar primary care practice does! On the gripping hand, if you have the burning in the belly to be The Captain of the Ship (and it's not just GERD from the greasy chow last night), AND you are willing to commit 8 years of your post BS life to a program, then I'd encourage anyone to consider medical school...even at relatively advanced ages...the oldest guy in our class was 46 the day we started school. ck S. Guest guest
Hola , Just curious but how did you decide between MD/DO school & PA? has done a good job of convincing me that I can do more and I should aim higher and has even offered to let me go back to school once she's out of vet school but I don't know which to do. PA school has a great appeal for the quicker time of school & no residency plus easier hours but medical school looks good for the extra prestige, money, and since PA students go thru the same classes as med students (from what I hear), why not do an extra year or two of lecture? Then again, PA looks good due to the easier ability to shift to a different specialty. I'm just curious on your views and your thought process on selecting PA over MD/DO. Before leaving Aggieland, I stopped by the office of prof school advising. I got the impression that getting into PA school has gotten as hard as med school and has more prerequisites to take & the impression that the two levels were fairly the same difficulty to get into partly due to the increasing popularity of PA school. Thanks, Andy PS- I won't be able to reply back until later tonight because Nik is taking our one computer to school and I'll be asleep. --- mayfieldr wrote: > Hello, > > I am a paramedic who is considering working towards > becoming a PA.
