Guest guest
Hello everyone, my name is Christe. I am 380 pounds.(The last time I was weighed) I am very unhappy with my weight and i am seeking the surgery to improve my bloodpressure, swollen ankles, back pain, and all of the other akes and pains that I have as a result of my weight. Let me tell you all a little about myself. I am 26 years old I have 2 children, one age 2 (girl),and age 5 Marcel (my boy).I am married to a wonderful man who told me he is willing to support me to the fullest with the decision to have the surgery. I am very nervous about the surgery but health wise I know I need to have it. I have heard lots of stories about the surgery but I really dont know what to expect. I went to the first consultation meeting and there are so many who have had fantastic results. I want to be that one. I have my first appointment on 4/8/2003 to meet with the surgeon. That meeting I have been told is a long one. But, when I get finished with all of my questions it may be even longer. The only thing that really scares me is vomiting. I never get sick to my stomach. That is one of my phobias, getting sick. Is getting sick apart of the healing process even if you do what you are supposed to do? Oh well, if so then I guess I will be sick then! I would like to ask anyone who has any info that may help me with this road I am about to journey down please email me and help me out. Thanks for reading. Guest guest
Christe - The only times I vomit are when I've eaten too fast, taken too big of bites, and not chewed carefully enough. I had a rough couple of weeks about 2 months out when I was overfilling my pouch, but since then it has really tapered off. I have to be really careful with meat like chicken or beef. You'll get to know your own body, too, and one of the ways we do that is learning what makes us sick. You'll be able to get used to it. Take care. Jeanne in WI Age 39 - Dr. T. Guest guest
Hi Christie, Welcome. My starting weight was 381. right there with ya. As far as the vomiting........ well the only reasons I ever vomited was totally my fault. Let me explain. We do not chew our food well. I sure didn't. If you can consume a burger in under 5 minutes, you don't either. That was the biggest reality for me. I thought, sure I chew my food...... well .......NOT. After surgery, some rules to remember and follow are these: 1. Take tiny baby sized bites 2. Chew till it is mush in your mouth. and then chew some more 3. Do not drink when you eat 4. When you think to yourself........ gee I think I might be getting full........ STOP. You are. That one more little bit will be too much. The body has this amazing thing it does, when it is too full, it sends these digestive juices, some call it foaming at the mouth, in the form of saliva to help get the food moving out of the tummy. Well we have this little pouch with a little opening, we have just put too much in it and it is not happy. Here come the extra saliva your body will produce to get things moving. Well....... the pouch is already full..... no room at the inn so to speak. So here comes this huge amount of saliva.......... your getting even fuller. Something has to give, you pray to throw up. And when you do....... you are so relieved. Swear you will not do that again....... but then....... the next time it happens, you can do it again. Takes most of us a few times to get it. The only times I vomited were when I didn't chew well enough, or I was doing something else when I ate, not paying attention, and let my old habits slip in. Do that a few times and hopefully you learn. LOL. Hugs, Jules Romero 381/243/160 Lap RNY 5-29-2002 Dr. Hargroder - Plaquemine, LA My mind went for a walk when I wasn't looking. Unsure............. Guest guest
Just had to throw this in too. I'm pre-op but my Sister had a distal/GB Sept.18,2001 was nauseas one time the first day in the hospital when she got up to walk. the nurse ran in gave her a shot to take it away. She then slept for a couple of hours and have not ever since coming home have ever thrown up has wished she could at times but not even trying to make herself can she. I know she is rare with this. but if she eats to much or not chew it up well enough she just has to suffer thru it. I don't know what would be worse suffering thru it or throwing it up and it all goes away. HUGS! nette pre-op until May 7th > Hi Christie, > Welcome. Guest guest
Hi! I threw up in the first two or three months pretty much, because I had a hard time learning the lessons - You must eat slowly. You must chew like crazy. You must take very small bites. You must stop the INSTANT you feel full. Once I learned those lessons, the upchucking stopped. By pretty much, I mean I threw up maybe three or four times a week. There are lots of people who never threw up at all, and plenty of people who do, even much more... it depends on your own personal tummy... You could even start now trying to learn to eat slowly. Get yourself a baby spoon. Take a teeny spoonful, and chew it to death ... maybe 20 or 30 chews. Put your spoon down while you do it. Say something to your dining partner. Wait at least a minute and maybe longer to take another teeny bite. After surgery, when you finally get onto whole food, you'll be eating maybe a quarter to a half-cup of food, and you'll want it to last 20 minutes or longer. You could see even now what that will feel like. Of course, later, you'll be full in 20 minutes, for sure... You will learn to 'listen' to your body and you'll know when it's full, and if you take one more bite, you risk upchucking. These things, over the weeks, become habits and will be easier and easier... Good luck! Sharon in D.C. Unsure............. Hello everyone, my name is Christe. Guest guest
Making a comment here on forced vomiting. I'd be careful of doing anything that would put stress on the staple line of not only your pouch, but your bowel anastamosis. Forcing yourself to vomit on a routine basis may cause staple stress. I'm not saying it Will cause a problem, but it CAN......... So, follow the rules on eating, as some have suggested, and eat slowly, and small amounts, chew. Be kind to your pouch. It's delicate, we do this as per above plus following to the letter what Your particular surgeon allows you to eat, such as clear liquids, full liquids, pureeds. Having a leak for the past 4 months has not been a picnic. And feeding yourself via a g-tube is not fun. Having a delayed leak can happen as one member just mentioned. So please, it scares me when members talk about forcing that extra food. Trying stuff too early, and making themselves vomit, because they choose to eat too fast. Ok, getting off my soap box, I'm just having a very hard time the past few days with going over 16 weeks without being able to eat. So, not pointing any fingers, just saying PLEASE BE KIND to YOUR POUCH............ a depressed Debbie

I noticed you've been kinda quiet the past few days. I wish I knew what to say to help you feel better, but I don't. Just know that I am thinking of you and praying for your recovery. Take care, hon.
