Good idea! I wonder if anyone has tried almond milk? Can't remember the count on that but my kids liked it.

Mine told me to count milk as it's own group, and that it was necessary for calcium. Also studies prove that milk can help reduce weight. It's all a matter of knowing how to incorporate it in your diet. As a diabetic, there is no evidence that you need to avoid milk. Simply account for it in your meal plan. Unless you have allergies, it has more benefits than downsides... Mike
Guest guest
Anybody drink the Hood milk it only has 5 g of carbs in it per cup not as good as real milk but an adequate substitute. sharon Re: Re: Cereal & Milk for breakfas > > > > My nutritionist also said to count milk as a carb. Something I forgot to mention in my previous post was that there are some brands of soy milk that are lower in carbs than regular milk - and still have about the same amount of protein. I personally like Silk, 8th Continent, and the local grocery store brand. As a side note, if you have tried the unrefrigerated soy milk (the kind that comes in boxes) before and hated it, try the refrigerated stuff. For some reason the flavor is a lot better. I actually prefer it to regular milk most of the time, because it has a nice " nutty " flavor. (Kind of like me! Ha ha ha.) Molly
Guest guest
My diabetes nurse gave me a piece of paper with a list of things and their carbs and things you need to count and things you don't need to count. I have found it to be probably the most useful single sheet of paper I have ever seen. I have not done this yet, but I would be willing to scan it and send it to people if you email me, I don't think we can send attachments on this list (? Can we post a document like that on the web page?) It is a little frowsy and scribbled on, but I have found that I have to be very very careful about many of the things where a serving is identified with a number of carbs, and the things that are identified as not necessary to count do not spike my blood sugar even though they do have some carbs. Like nuts and cheese. Milk has to be counted, and she said the fermenting process in making cheese changes the way the carbs are processed. I expect for the experienced people here it would be all old news, but maybe some people would like to have it. It sure helped me. And I have lost 19 pounds now, since December, so it helped with that too. I just passed the official line according to a BMI chart I have from obese to just fat. I am really happy. Good point Jan. I think you just figured out the confusion here. Milk is shown on the groups as it's own group, dairy, and the carbs are counted. Cheese would be in with proteins and not counted on the carbs. Never knew the exact reason for it but saw that's how it was. Thanks, it makes a lot of sense.
