One word: bling.

If I were running a private transfer service, however, I'd write the

flight suits off as a marketing expense... especially giant red flight

suits. It's certainly going to get you noticed and talked about.

BTW, Metrocare didn't " put their people through " that course. They

allowed employees to attend the course at no cost, but didn't pay them

their hourly wage to attend, even though the course material was to be

used on duty to staff a specialty care truck. I've wondered out loud

to several people if that's not a wage & hour violation and the

majority opinion is if it's not mandatory then it's not a wage and

hour violation per se.

It does, however, seem unethical to put employees into a class " at no

charge " (i.e. " we're not going to charge you the class fee, so we're

saving you money (think used car sales and fabric guard coverage)) and

then not pay them to be there if you're going to make (more) money off

of them when they complete the class... and when they're GIVING UP

paid shifts (ie LOSING PAY) to take the class. Then again, that seems

to be the mentality of for-profit EMS - marketing and profit at the

expense of employees.

Mike :)

for one reason: in case of fire. They're uncomfortable as hell.
