Fellas and Ladies

Let me state right up front that I am not in favor of collecting up front.

However, I feel the following:

1. All medics should know what their charges are and should be able to quote

them immediately to their patients.

2. All medics should be up on the paper work required to be able to bill

appropriately for their services.

3. It is ethical for a field medic to be able to inform a patient of the cost of

their care if the patient request.

4. While not requesting money up front, it is ethical to inform the patient that

they will be responsible for the cost of their transport and treatment.

5.None of the above is a medics job.

Why #:

1. Patients have the right to know what their ride will cost them.

2. As employees we are responsible for filling all paperwork out properly so

that our employer may be reimbursed for the transport. Note: Before we get this

started, I am not saying doctor the paperwork.

3. The patient has to make real time decisions about their healthcare. If no one

ask, you do not have to offer it up.

4. For most folks having to ride in an ambulance is new. Many if not all have no

clue as to the funding issues involving ambulance transport. Many think it is

free. Non Emergency transports, especially those where the need for transport is

questionable, the patient should be informed that they will be responsible for

the bill.

5. Hog Wash, it is your job. All of it. That is what you get paid to do. If your

a volunteer it is a responsibility you take on when you volunteer.

Let me expound what a paramedic should be paid. If we paid them what they think

their worth, well you see where that would go. Paramedics are paid based on the

market and what it will support. How many times have I heard the phrase that

burger flippers make more than paramedics. Poo Poo! How many burger flippers do

you know that make 30-40,000 a year. O I know your next question would be what

about the 56 hours I have to work each week. Well what about only working 10

days a month or how about sleeping while you work. Its all about what the market

will tolerate.

To me being a good EMS is employee is about the whole job. The patient treatment

part is just one of the benefits. Riding for the brand as the old timers would

say. Supporting your department, looking after its financial by making sure that

you have legally documented your care and filled out any and all paper work

necessary for you employer to get his money.

Well that's enough right here before Christmas. I hope everyone has a good

Christmas and gets to wet a line before the new year.

Henry, your post ought to be required reading for every medic and every EMS

manager.

Your analysis is perfect. Also, your work ethic and the way you present it

is, THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.

Ride for the Brand!
