Many of us on Coumadin feel we can get by on less of if we minimize

our intake of Vitamin K.

Eliminating Vitamin K has a risk of increased propensity for bone

fractures among other risks. The key is to find a consistent intake

of Vitamin K and adjust our Coumadin to that level. Vitamin K is

essential to our bodies.

The Life Extension Foundation published an article on this in their

April magazine. I found it very good reading and learned some things

and hope you will, too. I don't plan to take Vit. K supplements but I

sure plan to continue it in my diet.

LEF does sell supplements. They also do more research on supplements

than any organization I know.

Yes, I tried this approach myself this month. My INR normally runs

about 2.0, but this past month I avoided nearly all leafy greens. (I

take 7.5 mg warfarin daily). The result: my INR this Thursday was

3.1. So if you think intake of Vitamin K - rich foods has little

bearing on your INR results, think again.

Hello Mike:

It isn't just green leafy veggies that will alter your INR, I

believe large portions of meat and or bread will lower your INR. 1

cup of flour has about 350mcg of vitamin K.

Last August I was on vacation and ate lots of salads and very

little meat.

When I came back and had my INR tested it was 2.2.....What helps me

is to stay away from Canola oil(high in vitamin K) and I use only

sesame or olive oil on my salads or for cooking.

HI

I try to eat green veggies everyday. My INR is almost always between 2.1 to

2.4.

The key is to make sure you eat the same amount of greens each day.

That didn't work for my husband. The green veggies are not all interchangeable

with the others, and he likes spinach. Spinach has at least 3 times as much

vitamin K as the others that we ate.

Hi to all.

I see a lot of discussion about " leafy greens " but please be aware of

all the things that influence INR. One list I found is as follows :-

Found in kelp, alfalfa, green plants, leafy green vegetables, cow's

milk, yogurt, egg yolks, black strap molasses, polyunsaturated oils,

fish liver oils. Also Alcohol I'm afraid!

I got caught out because I always have a bowl of cerial before bed,

which I don't have on holiday in a hot country. My INR went over 5.5

while in Portugal, I now guess it was the cow's milk in the cerial

that was missing.

I have read that Vitamin K can be produced in the intestines and this

function is improved with the presence of cultured milk, like yogurt,

in the diet, Vitamin K is classified as a fat-soluble vitamin

If I can get my defense in quick - I stopped drinking all alcohol 3

years ago, I'm on 6mg of warferin a day, and my INR is 2.5 - 3 month

in month out.

Consistency is the Key.

With Easter coming up, wasn't it nice to read in the paper that

chocolate is good for you??? Now that one I would take with a pinch of

salt!

Hi Mike

My INR is always out when I return from my annual holiday, it is very

difficult to keep to same diet, different foods in a different country,

just need to get back on track when I return.

Since the moderator has asked that long posting history be deleted when posting,

I now have a hard time telling what was the " original message " because the

" original message " words are DELETED TOO very often. Can't we LEAVE the

" From/To/Sent/Subject " info intact like it is below from now on, and then scroll

to the bottom and delete up to the end of the " original message " , before

sending?

Hi ine / Mike

Most clinics and I guess all hospitals in tourist areas have the

ability to test INR and give you an immediate reading. I usually

reduce my Warferin slightly while I'm in Portugal (learned from

experience in the last number of trips (say 6 times x 3 weeks)and have

it tested at the end of the second week. The cost in the clinic is

9.20 Euros, and the answer immediate. As my INR is always stable at

home, any adjustment made goes back to my normal 6mg a day when I get

home and a test again the next week.
