Off Topic: Cat question. minor paw injury

Chip, or any other resident cat experts. my cat seems to have a little

injury on her dew claw (you know the little lob of skin that looks like a

finger pad on the dog's leg dunno if its called the dew claw on cats too)

anyways she seems to have a cut there. Not sure what caused it. Its not

bleeding but when i touched it, it kinda bled for a second. What is some

basic cat aid that I can do for my little kitty. She probably got that cut

when she decided to stick her paw down the bathroom sink drain wich she

likes to do but gets her paw stuck...

Any help would be apreciated

usually i'd say put a little neosporin or antibiotic ointment on it but it

sounds like she could lick it off where it is - if you think she'd leave a

wrapping on it you could try that but i'm not sure - the other option is to

take her to petsmart or petco or your equivalent -- they usually have a vet

tech who will look at small injuries like that and advise you on how to

treat them for free! -- the other thought that comes to mind is to clean it

and put liquid bandaid (for pets) on it but that still leaves you having to

go to a pet shop - you could always call her vet and just ask over the

phone tell them it isn't bad enough for a trip to the vet but you'd like to

know if theres anything you should be treating it with anyway. (my vet

would do that but some might not - depends on your vet)

and lastly keep an eye on it - she may be keeping it clean herself cats are

pretty good about that

Hey Chantelle,

Well it seems to me that your little kitty cat must of chipped off the quick

part off her little dew claw! A quick is a small pinkish tissue color inside the

nails, we all have it, all living things got one. It's like cutting your

fingernails, and yeah it'll hurt so bad when you accidently hit the quick, ouch

man!

Just get some septic powder at your local petstore, PetsMart, or even at

PetCo. It's a small bottle like container that got yellow powder in it, for

stopping the bleeding in any pets nails. Just apply a bit with pressure on her

nail, and it'll go away! See, isn't that simple or what!? Thanks for asking me,

I had experience when I make accidents on my own fat lazy cat, lol! Even in the

past at my old job and training school too, I got a good memory like an

elephant! Lemme know how it goes, take care!

HI Chantelle-

Poor Auryn Sun! I think Chip meant Styptic powder - it's a yellow powder that

is used to help stop blood flow when one cuts nails too short (for example), or

trims feathers too short on birds.

(Septic of course means acondition produced by anaerobic bacteria. If severe,

the wastewater turns black, gives off foul odors, causing or resulting from

putrefaction, contains little or no dissolved oxygen and creates a high oxygen

demand)..

If she were my cat today I would just take a wait and see attitude. She

probably will take very good care of it and it sounds easy for her to reach to

care for. So long as it looks healthy, dry, not swollen, not draining or

oozing, and continues to heal - then I would say it's fine. If it starts to

drain, or there is an increase in drainage, or it is swollen, or increasingly

tender to the touch, or she starts to favor the leg (avoid putting weight on it)

then I would have a vet look at her - because perhaps it is deeper than we can

see, or she might need help with the infection. Putting medication or bandages

on it will probably only help get rid of her hairballs (ointment licking) and

amuse her (getting he bandage off).

If she were me cat 25 years ago, I would be at the vets ASAP because I would be

soo worried, and he would have given me the above advice ;o)

Thanks you guys Actualy Aeryn's pretty happy at the moment. I do wish she

would stop sticking her silly little paw down the bathroom sink drain. I

usualy have to rescue her from that. Luckly she only puts her paw down the

drain when the water is flowing.
