Guest guest
Hi all Again, I have to post this, I am so frustrated and ticked! I let this SLP from the county school sit in 's typical pre school classroom and watch her, BIG mistake. This SLP basically was just watching to what it seems like to me to just confirm what she has been thinking about my dd since school probably even since the PAINT eval 18 months ago. She came right out and told me that is Autistic. She followed that up with now I cant diagnose but this is what I see.... She ran down a list of things that to me would typically be of a child who was never in this school and had just started 4 1/2 weeks ago (plus, she only goes to this typical school 2 times a week). That is a total of 9 days! She also made sure she pointed out some of 's sensory issues, but then follows that up with that she is very smart! She also told me that she was NOT Apraxic, because she can repeat words to easily. She was very determined that I knew she thaught is autistic and not Apraxic because the PECS system works for her and the techniques that she uses on her other Apraxic kids do not work for . Needless to say I said nothing but OK and thank you, and walked away. I then called 's OT specialist who is trained in sensory intergration and as soon as I said what this SLP told me, she responded without hesitation that is NOT autistic because she engages with too many people, adults and peers. I went to pick up later that day and when i spoke to the special ed teacher (different person) she said that she agreed with the SLP and that she thinks Jullie is autistic as well. This is like a game or something, she has a communication disorder/sensory processing and sometimes has a hard time focusing and paying attention, all of this I am not denying, but I know my daughter and I know she has quirks but she also engages with me her family members and cousins and even starting to engage with a few kids in the special ed class, Sophie is one that has mild CP and they really get along. I wanted to say then, tot his teacher, why does she come up to you with a baloon and look you in the eye while holding it out to you to play!!! There problem is they dont understand that she can communicate non verbally but has a hard time communicating with words, that really irks them. Sorry for venting but appreciate all listening. Needless to say I brushed everything they both said off my shoulder.

Many of us have a few traits. My son's are: a rather Aspergerish obsession with tractors, and a strong dislike of looking into mirrors, and some real head banger tantrums when he was younger. He is not autistic though, according to the dev. ped., he is apraxic. When he was younger, I did much reading about autism, as it was one of my fears. Autism and apraxia are both neurological disorders and are helped by some of the same interventions. EFAs, enzyme supplements, GFCF diet are things that helped us. He remains gluten free as it makes a huge difference in his health and behavior. Jeanne, mom to 3 1/
