ok.... *takes a deep breath...* everyone gets told " exercise... exercise.. "

when they are at a plateau... well... I honestly don't think I can exercise

ANY more... I walk a mile in the morning... I walk a mile at lunch.. I walk

a mile before I got to bed... AND I do water aerobics 3 times a week... plus

half a mile of walking and half a mile of jogging EVERY day... I cant

exercise anymore... there is just not enough hours in the day... I really

think I did this... I do.. that crap I pulled last weekend... I haven't lost

a SINGLE pound since last Friday... this week has been horrid... it has been

all ... ALL I could do to crawl outta bed... but I have continued to

exercise.... sweat heavens its been hard.... I was in tears last night...

but I did it... this has been a really rough week... I know I just have to

keep plugging... I started back on liquids tonight... I am gonna do protein

shakes, water, and liquids for 3 days... this was my own idea... but I am

abusing eating... I am eating to fast.. and too much... gonna just kinda

start over... I came home and had egg drop soup... gonna go do a PS before I

go to bed... then ****CRAWL*** my tired ass into the sheets.... I am

convinced all the exercise will pay off... repeat after me " Kristi WILL play

rball... Kristi WILL play rball " ... I just wanted to say.... I have to

wonder if exercise is all its cracked up to be when it comes to plateaus....

cause I am living proof that that scale doesn't listen to your gym bag...

BTW my scales are still in my freezer *curt nod*

Dear Kristi,

When the scales arent moving as quickly as you think they should, try

taking your measurements.. you are most likely dropping inches. The exercise

will pay off.. gosh... you are so determined with this exercise thing.. I

wish I were as devoted and as " energetic " when it came to exercise.. I guess

you have discovered by now.. I really dont like exercise at all...

Dont beat yourself up.. you are right on target for feeling tired.. you are

what .. a little more than 5 weeks post op.. Regressing your diet and getting

back on track is a good idea if you think you are abusing food. I think you

will learn to eat slowly, and to stay away from those things that stimulate a

need to eat.. thngs such as hidden sugars, carbs, etc.. Protein will curb the

cravings for carbs and sugars.. and plateaus dont last forever.. I ,

personally, dont like the word plateau......... prefer to think of them as

steps too getting me to the goal I want to be at..

Take care.. and call me when you are happy and when you are feeling so

discouraged.. I am always willing to listen... nods , nods, nods.. may not

have the right words to say . smiling sweetly, but my shoulders are big and

can carry the load you need to share.. * big smile*

Take care

K - Hon, we warned you about the hibernation syndrome, right? You've been so

good about exericising, but your body is used to it, and it still thinks it's

starving right now, so that is why you are so tired. Don't beat yourself to

exercise more. Just keep up your normal stuff as best you can. And you do need

more rest until your body figures out that everything is gonna be OK. Keep up

the protein and the water. Are you taking all your vitamins? This too shall

pass. But it will be a couple more weeks at least. So, try not to become

discouraged. It's totally normal.

Another thing to take notice of Kristi is that with all that exercise you

are building lean muscle which weighs more than fat. You should be checking

your measurements and how clothing fits right now to see the progress and

forget about those numbers on the scale. This is why VitaLady (Mom) tells

us to send her the scale for the first 2 years. Pounds are just a number

its the change in your body and fitness level that means the most. You can

lose pounds and stay soft bodied and not get as much out of having had this

surgery if you don't exercise and tone those muscles. The fact that you CAN

do all that walking and stuff is a testament to the fact that the surgery is

working for you. Stop getting on that nasty scale and start looking at

yourself wearing those sexy undies you go out and buy. Start checking how

much closer to booty shorts you are and don't worry about the ounces and

pounds. Get it? Got it? Good!

Now get some rest hon your body is begging for it :)

I have also been on a plateau for around two months now although I excercise

regularly. I also cannot find much difference in my measurements and I was

really panicy and became very anxious. This put me in a state of nervous/

compulsive eating. But I have been reassured by a friend who undergone the same

process that after years of yoyoing and fluctuating weight and a massive

surgery, it is not uncommon for the body to resist attempts at weight loss but

that I am bound to get off that plateau.

Hi K,

Sheesh......... you are doing a lot. Maybe take a couple days off....... no

exercise, to recoup, then start back. Obviously your body thinks it is being

starved and holding onto everything it has. Change your strategy. Fool the

body. Feed it, and don't exercise for a couple days........ let it relax.......

then bam........ go get it girl.

Hi Guys! I am pre-op nut, My Sister had wls/distal Sept 2001

and only excercised probably the first month and that was it.

She has alot of sagging and no muscle tone what so ever to show

for it. She thinks she looks ok I think it has taken years off

her looks. Anyway! Back to subject...

Muscle weighs more than fat, and you will end the platue it could

take sometimes a couple of months for you body to catch up. one

day on the scale nothing/the next day over a 10 lbs lose. I have

seen my sister go on this way for months. I can't stress enough

about shakes and vits. but she thinks she knows what she is doing

and I can't push her in the right direction even though I try

everyday. She asked me last night how am I going to take care of

her after I have surgery. I stay on her/give her B12 shots make

her meals most of the time and she still eat stuff she shouldn't

well she started this at 303 and is now 180 and that hasn't moved

in months and I think she is where she is going to stay without

any effort from her.

Hang in there you are doing all of the right things it will end

soon(The platue that is)......big hugs!

Dear K-grrl (Kristi),

I hear you. I understand your frustration with your plateau but don't

give up on the exercise. It's a good thing, trust me.

's absolutely right. Sometimes when the scales are moving down,

our measurements ARE. Muscle weighs MORE than fat so with all that exercise

you're probably building muscle. That's a GREAT thing. The more muscle you

have, the healthier you'll be/feel.

The weight WILL come off and the plateau will be crossed/defeated.

I'm proud of you.

Love,

Trace

Kristi, here's some info on hibernation syndrome, which you may be in. If so, ya

just gotta wait

it out...

After WLS, you may be feeling tired and become depressed. When you are several

weeks post op, and

are either on a liquid diet or you are eating many fewer calories than you were

pre op, this

depression and inactivity can become more pronounced. All you want to do is

sleep, you may have

crying spells, you may begin to believe that the surgery was a mistake, or you

may think 'what in

the world have I done to myself?' All these feelings are completely normal. The

low number of

calories you are eating produces what many of us call the 'hibernation syndrome'

and your

depression and feelings of despair are a direct result.

During the weeks immediately following surgery, our body starts to notice that

we are not taking

in enough calories. It doesn't know we've had WLS. Our body is missing food,

thinks this is a

famine and struggles to conserve our energy. The human body reacts like it

always has in a famine;

it makes us depressed -- so we don't have the motivation to do anything, and it

makes us tired --

so we don't have the energy to do anything. In this way, we will conserve as

many calories as

possible and remain alive. You can see the practical value of this as our bodies

have been living

through famines, snowstorms, and other periods of unstable food supply for

centuries.

This stage can last several weeks. Our discomfort is compounded as we are, at

this same time,

trying to recover from major surgery, adopt new eating habits and deal with a

liquid or soft diet.

To get out of this stage, our body has to say to itself 'gee, this famine is

lasting a bit too

long. If I keep conserving my energy with inactivity, I will starve to death.

I'd better use my

last store of energy (the remaining fat and muscles in our body) to hunt up some

food'. At this

point, our body will switch from getting energy from food, to getting energy

from our fat (and

muscle too if we don't eat enough protein) and that is what we want.

In order to deal with this difficult transition period, tell yourself that

you're right on track;

this is exactly what is normal and to be expected. Tell yourself that, in a few

weeks, this will

pass, and you will feel like a completely new person. We all seem to turn the

corner about 4-6

weeks post op. Then, your mood will lighten and, with your weight loss starting

to add up, you'll

feel more positive and have a better outlook on life. Just keep telling yourself

that you will not

always feel this way! You WILL be back to feeling like your old self. Just give

it time!

I've been there !! The scale was stuck fir 3 weeks and boy was I depressed. I

workout 6 days a week at the gym

and it still did'nt move. Until yesterday I made it 60 1/2 lbs and 20 3/4

inches in 3 months and 2 days (post op). I was stuck at 54 lbs for 3 weeks. So

keep up the exercise and don't weight daily do it only 1 or twice a week and in

the morning after you get up and go pee, and remember to measure you'll loose

inches before lbs. Thats the best time to weight, try it. Keep your chin up

exercise will pay off in the end, will also tighten that flab!
