My daughter and I both have diabetes (she is 4yrs old with type 1 & I

have type 2)We both were diagnosed about 6-7 months ago. I keep

hearing about people using thier insulin way past the 28-30 days after

it has been opened. A friend of ours offered us some of her extra

bottles of novolog since she never uses all that she gets every month.

I couldn't understand how she had so many bottles stocked up in the

fridge until she told me that she uses so little that she uses the

same bottle sometimes for 3 months. Since she has trouble regulating

her blood sugars all the time, I'm wondering if it is because she is

using that insulin way beyond when she should be tossing it.

I talked to my pharmacist about this. She said that Lantus has to be used

within 28 days of opening.

The others (like R and NPH) can be used until the expiration date on the

bottle. So I would guess that 3 months is well within your friends 'safe'

zone for using the insulin. (Especially if they are kept cool after

opening).

I use Levimir which should stored between 5 and 8C (41 and 46F) and then it

can be used for up to 6 weeks (42 days) when kept at an ambient temperature

no greater than 30C (86F) I believe that the same rules apply to Lantus.

Take care. Barry UK
