Guest guest
Hi Jody, It's true-the minute you give something to make him go, the antibiotics will probably kick in, in that department. But, I guess I'd go ahead anyway. You want elimination happening while he's fighting the infection. Prune juice is a miracle worker. 8 oz.s works for me, so he won't need much. Keep the clear fluids up. And then, after an anitbiotic course you want to give something that helps the body restore the good bacteria in the gut. Active culture yogurt was enough for , but isn't enough for all our kids. Good luck I was going to say-hope everything comes out alright-but that's an old joke-so I won't. hehe. in Ma. Guest guest
Ethan has not had any real constipation issues up until this past week. Nothing has changed in his diet. He currently is on antiobiotic for an ear infection and even with that, he is still constipated. I feel back for him because he cries and cries. He is tube fed only so I have tried giving him apple juice through the tube. This doesn't seem to help. I am afraid of giving him more juice because I feel the antiobiotic will kick in and then we'll have the opposite problem. Someone suggested pear/prune juice to me, but I haven't tried that yet. If this continues after the antiobiotic is done, I will talk to the nutritionist to maybe add Pediasure with fiber to his current Pediasure. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Hey Jody, Hayley is exactly that on antibotics for the seventh week in a row for middle ear infection. Along with it she was suffering with constipation until i tried pear juice watered down 20mls of pear juice and 40mls of H20. This is working a treat. I know the kids are different but we tried hayley with pediasure with fibre and it made her worst. As i say they are all different when coming to try things out, but I thought I would share this with you as I have just come out the otherside of it just recently. Functions are working a treat now. :-) cheers mum to Hayley (nearly three years old, cant believe it) Australia Jody Wolfe wrote: Ethan has not had any real constipation issues up until this past week. Guest guest
Prune Juice is the best, not apple juice. Apples have a very low content of taking care of constipation, Prunes have a very high content. Guest guest
We use pear juice. Usually 10 mL 3 times a day for a day or two solves the problem. Guest guest
That's probably true for apple juice (I haven't tried it). Our pediatrician suggested pear juice (I guess because it has the added advantage of not changing the poop color). Pear juice works well. It has a high level of sugars and pectin which both help to keep water in the stool, instead of being absorbed by the intestines. Krista Bach wrote: Prune Juice is the best, not apple juice. Guest guest
Interesting that you said pear juice has a a high level of pectin. Our pediatrician recommended pear juice for Kendra as well, to help with consitpation. Which it did. But she said that because it had *lower* pectin than apple juice it would be helpful in reducing constipation. She said the pectin in apple juice caused constipation. Hmmm. Well, either way, it seems to be helpful! Constipation issues Ethan has not had any real constipation issues up until this past week. Nothing has changed in his diet. Guest guest
I hate saying something wrong. So I did a little pectin research on the internet. I couldn't find any direct comparisons of apples to pears in terms of how much pectin each has. One medium pear has 6 g of fiber, and 41% of that is pectin (so 3 g). I couldn't find similar data on apples, but numerous sites said they were " rich " in pectin, and one of these sites went on to say that the pectin in apples is supposed to improve gut motility (and I would imagine that would improve constipation). Pectin is a soluble fiber, so it should be present in the juice too. So I don't know who's right. I don't know if 3 g is enough to consider a pear " high " in pectin? Guest guest
(almost 11 yr. CHARGEr) had constipation issues that eventually led to megacolon problem. We had been giving her prune juice, but the GI docs say that leads to more gas as well. She has been taking Miralax and has done very well. We also give her acidopholus (sp?) powder to increase the good bacteria in her intestines. And we use Pediasure with fiber.
