Guest guest
Hi everyone- It has been a while since I've written or been on the listserv... but we are in need of some input. My son Ben, (17 mo. CHARGEr) has bilateral grade 4 urinary track reflux. Since he has a trach and will be ungoing airway reconstruction surgery later this year, ENT wants all surgeries done before they start (since he has a stable airway and they won't want him intubated after they start the repair work). I'm curious to hear who has had reflux corrected... how it was done... what were your thoughts on the surgery and recovery... and was it successful. We are torn between the re-routing surgery and the deflux injection. The doc is recommending the surgery (of cource), but we have some concerns. Any help would be great!! Guest guest
Hi Amy! My son, Aiden, had grade 4 bilateral urinary reflux as well. He went through the ureter re-implantation surgery to repair this when he was 7 months old. Like you, I was a little hesitant to send our little guy under the knife again, but the surgery, although complicated, was very successful. He had three small incisions in his abdomen, and he was home again in about 5 days. In a follow up exam about 6 months later, it was determined that the reflux had completely resolved! In speaking with some of his doctors and doing some research online prior to this, some info I found out was that the success rate for the surgery is 90% and the injection generally doesn't work in severe reflux cases. So we dedided to ahead with it, and I am glad we did. That is one less thing to worry about in the constellation of other issues Aiden is dealing with. Good luck with all of Ben's upcoming surgeries and I hope that was helpful!
