Maxie,

How dare you...how can we panic and run about screaming " Debacle " and " The end

of EMS as we know it " if all you are going to do is provide us the facts???

I plotted these on a map and besides something in the I-10 area between

Kerrville and El Paso....looks like another one could be used between Houston

and Tyler along Hwy 59....that would get us to 21 sites and would mimic what

DSHS currently has available.

Dudley

PS: Thanks for taking this job...good luck in all your endeavors.

And, there are many many other VUE/Prometric test sites. My college has

one.

Since we don't have a paramedic program, it's not likely set up as an EMS

testing site - but if the demand was there, it wouldn't be too hard for VUE

to give the exam (computer-based) - all they have to do is schedule and

download it (after being approved as an NREMT test site, but I'd imagine VUE

has a processs in place for that).

FWIW, I've taken many CBT exams at VUE (technology certifications). Other

than internet issues delaying their " download " of an exam from their

national test bank, I've never had a single issue.

Mike,

Well, just call up VUE and try to talk to them about this. I think you'll

be glad you shave yer head, otherwise you'd pull what hair you have out after

talking to them. They're absolutely clueless, obnoxious, and about as helpful

as the IRS when you call them.

Folks, we're dealing with corporate bureaucracies here that transcend

anything you could possibly imagine. If NR weren't bad enough, Pearson VUE

will

make you see white flashes and drive yer BP up to treatable levels.

And Mike, the cool part is after it is up and running January...all those

Really? The results aren't instant? Please don't interpret that as a

complaint - all the technology certification exams provide for instant

results - VUE hands you a printed copy of the test results right there as

you finish the exam.

Do you know what the reason is for the delay? Or is it just a day until

it's actually posted on the NREMT site (as in you get a printed score report

same day but it's not transferred from VUE to NREMT until that night)?

FWIW TCLEOSE has moved to CBT as well - they made the move about six months

ago.

Gene -

I've never tried calling VUE. I've scheduled every test I've ever

taken online through their web site. That, or I just walk in. Their

testing center employees are required to be certified by VUE - not

" just anyone " can administer their tests - they do have at least some

training requirements in how to schedule exams, etc. and they seem, at

least in person, to focus on customer service.

On the Microsoft testing web site it states:

" Pearson VUE uses the speed and reliability of the Internet for

security-enhanced data transmission to and from the testing center so

your exam is ready when you expect it and your test results are

quickly and accurately reported to Microsoft. Choose from more than

3,000 conveniently-located Pearson VUE Authorized Centers in more than

130 countries.

Pearson VUE offers three easy ways to register for your MCP exam:

1. Register online for the ultimate in control and convenience.

2. Register by telephone. In the United States and Canada call (800)

TEST-REG ([800] 837-8734) to speak with an agent. Find a call center

in your part of the world.

3. Register in person at your local testing center. Find a testing

center near you.

Advanced Web Services

From real-time scheduling to a dynamic testing center locator, Pearson

VUE sets the standard for Web services.

* Our testing center locator is dynamically linked to our production

database. If a center is listed, it is in business.

* The Pearson VUE online registration system lets you register every

minute of every day. You can also reschedule or cancel your exam

online. "

I'd imagine it would be much the same with NREMT, or at least VUE

would want it to be. If there's any administrative nightmares I'd

tend to " blame " [1] them on NREMT - especially in light of what's been

on the list recently and the complete lack of response from NR. For

reference, VUE also handles testing for hundreds of other agencies and

exams, including but not limited to: Excelsior College and the

NCLEX-RN exam. I'm not rallying VUE's flag or anything, but I've had

nothing but good experience with them (aside from the occasional wait

for them to re-download an exam, etc.). BTW, as a correction, they

are PEARSON-VUE, not VUE-PROMETRIC. I believe I mis-stated that

earlier... got them confused with Sylvan-Prometric.

http://www.vue.com

Now, to be fair, they do NOT list ANY sites in Texas as administering

the NREMT exams. They do have a nice map of where their sites are

(including one close to you in Abilene), but I'd bet that it's because

they don't yet administer the exam in Texas. That happens in January,

right?

Mike :)

[1] - As in " I'm not saying it's your fault, I'm saying I'm going to blame you. "

Man Gene,

I know things aren't all perfect and painless...but I went to the Pearson VUE

website...and the tests this corporation administers are really impressive...

Check out what they do JUST for healthcare: http://www.vue.com/health/

I don't see all these Board Specialties using a service that would be a

corporate bureaucracy that " transcends anything I could possibly imagine " . Mike

is the only one I have heard come forward with REAL Pearson VUE

experience...and his was good...

I suggest we stop hollering " the sky is falling...the sky is falling " until we

actually have substantive reason...not the result of a single phone call to a

single testing site out of 100's...in the US and around the world. Be

careful...there might actually be a wolf someday...

Dudley

PS: It looks like they are currently beta testing the NR test in 14

states...haven't seen any headlines of EMS screeching to a halt in those

states...not yet anyway.

Mike,

From what I heard at GETAC, it will be posted on the NR site in 24 hours...so I

guess that is the delay. Still, 24 hours for a test in Texas is pretty

snazzy....when I tested in Florida in 1992 you got your results while you

waited...that was pretty nice because the receipt you got with your score on it

was your cert until you got it in the mail in about 10 days....

I put the question out there because I went to Pearson VUE''s website and it

didn't even list any sites in Texas.

I'm concerned that things are not going to be in place on 1 Jan 2007. We've

called Pearson VUE and found that their folks who answer the phone don't have

a clue about NREMT testing.

I don't want us to have a debacle. So I post provacotive messages.

You have investigated to your satisfaction, and you're happy with what you

have found. Fine.

I just want all to do the same. I think it's going to be a cluster, but I

hope I'm wrong.

As opposed to the 6 weeks it took for NR to post my test results online, 2

more weeks to receive them in the mail, and 4 more weeks to get certified in

Texas... No wonder there's a 'medic shortage.... LOL

In my limited experience... things are always a bit of a cluster when they

change in *any* direction, whether good, bad or indifferent. CHange is

always resisted, minor problems are magnified by the anxious observer and

positives are ignored.

I'm not saying Pearson VUE will be any better or worse than what we have

now. I am just glad I don't have to go through that process again...
