They do have open MRI machines for those who don't fit into a regular MRI

machine. I have had an MRI and I did not like being in the machine. I went

into afib just before I had to go in it and they did not want to do the MRI and

I said I'm here just do it. It is scary being trapped in there and I did

not know at the time there was an open MRI but not all hospitals have them.

Where are you from? I know they do have open MRI in Boston and other major

cities.

Why are they telling you your husband has only 1-2 years left is it because

of the afib or other problems?

my 55 1/2 yr old husband has had afib since at least 7/00 & after 3

cardioversions was put on rythmal which worked until about 9/2005.Now

he is in continual uncontrolable afib. He is obese & also COPD so can't

even get MRI or cat scan done. What can I expect in remaining 1-2 years

left [per heart doctor]? Currently he is in hospital w/double

pneumonia. Thanks for being here. I just found y'all yesterday. God

bless y'all.

Just FYI, open MRI machines aren't much better than closed ones. I have to have

another closed one tomorrow and I am SEVERELY claustrophobic. I had an open one

three months ago and the only difference is you can put your arms beside you

instead of over your head for over an hour (which is very uncomfortable). The

open MRI takes twice as long because the magnets are only half as strong and

can't go in a complete circle. They didn't tell me this. You are also still

sandwiched between two halfs of the machine, so you still can't move or get out

in case of emergency. It was almost as claustrophobic as the closed one. Just

for your info ... but no matter his weight, he should be able to use an open

MRI. Hope this helps. And hope he's not claustrophobic.
