Guest guest
it is better to convert to normal sinus rythm, the more you wait the harder it will be to get in nsr. I have been in and out of afib for the past 15 years after my heart surgeries for aortic and mitral valve replacement. they tried all kind of medication for me to convert on my own but to no avail the only thing that worked was the electro cardio version i've done it about 6 times. I beleive for the cardioversio to work and be efficient is for your doctor to load you up on amiodorone like 400 to 600 mg for at least two weeks than do the cardioversion and slowly reduce the amiodorone to either 200 or 100 mg . this kind of treatment worked the best for me. Guest guest
Hi, I am a new member and would like to talk to others with afib that have had it for awhile. My heart has been in and out of rhythm for the past 8-10 years. I have had cardioversion 4 times with it staying in rhythm for various amounts of time. I am currently in afib and have been out of rhythm since last October. I have been on a antirythmatic drug called Tikosyn for 2 years. When I first started the drug my heart stayed in rhythm for 1 year. I do not have allot of symptoms, but general out of breath and tiredness all the time. I don't know what my next move should be. My doctors are saying that I might need to just live with it. I have heard some good and some bad things about ablation. What have your experiences been with getting your afib under control? nae in Alaska

I wonder why you're still taking it if your continually in afib; as it certainly isn't doing you any good. You could try other rhythm and/or rate control meds like Amiodarone or Flecainide or one of the beta blockers. If they work for you, fine, but if they don't it may be time to consult an EP to see if your heart is sturcturally sound and if you might be a candidate for a mini-maze or an ablation. You definitely should be seeing a specialist, preferably an electrophysiologist. I doubt any internist and few regular cardiologists have enough education and training on this specific condition to properly treat it. Guest guest
Nae - I was 15 months in NSR on tikosyn, and then it just quit. I'm now on Rhythmol, which is working well. If you haven't gone through all the antiarrhythmics yet, you might ask your doctor about switching to something else. These meds and known to sometime stop working, but just because one doesn't, doesn't mean another won't! Don't " learn to live with it " until you have exhausted all other avenues in your comfort range. - afib Hi, I am a new member and would like to talk to others with afib that have had it for awhile.
