Maxine,

100% initial pass rate? Wow that is impressive. Most of the NREMT pass

rates for Texas have been in the 40-50% range. My hat is off to Katy ISD for

that accomplishment. Congratulations!

I want to take advantage of this forum to congratulate Sam

and her Katy ISD ( High School) EMT students on

their 100% National Registry pass rate on their initial

test. This was a pilot program at Katy ISD, and will be

expanded to other campuses next year.

We were privilaged to have these students ride with us for

part their ambulance rotations. Several of them have

expressed an interest in volunteering here during the summer

months and we are looking forward to having them.

Wouldn't expect anything less from Katy ISD students, most of them

take their education very seriously. After all, the schools are one

of the largest reasons why people move to Katy. Good to see them do

so well!

On a side note, I know when I was in high school Cypress Creek EMS

started a similar program at my school (that was how I got my

basic). Out of the students who were in the class, only four of us

tested and two of us work/volunteer in EMS with me being the only

one who reached paramedic. I wonder if they still have the program.

Maybe hire-Pattison EMS, Katy VFD, West Lake VFD, West

County EMS, and Cy-Fair VFD can pick up these young medics!

One drawback is their age - they don't meet our minimum-age

requirements for driving the ambulances. Since they can't

drive, anytime they are part of a 2-person crew they have to

be the one in charge of patient care. Therefore, they can't

be scheduled with a Paramedic unless they are part of a 3-

person crew.

The volunteer option is a win-win deal. The department

benefits (we love having 3-person crews) and the brand new

EMTs are gaining some valuable experience, especially the

ones who plan to pursue careers in medicine. (Several of

them want to be doctors when they grow up!)

One of our current volunteer EMTs, Delmas, is also

one of Sam's former students (not from a school district

class, though). He will be entering medical school in the

not too distant future, and leaves tomorrow to spend two

months at the R Cowley Shock Trauma Center in

Baltimore. I know that feels that his experiences as

an EMT will be an asset to him, and I hope these new EMTs

feel the same way.
