Guest guest
Anyone in here have anything good or bad to say about Toprol 50 mg? Does it help in A'fib situations or make it worse.
Guest guest
Jim, Toprol is a beta-blocker. In most people, it will slow the heart rate down during a-fib, which is a definite help. I take the generic form of Toprol, metoprolol, and it helps to slow down my heart rate and reduce the symptoms of a-fib. Toprol is a rate control drug, not an anti-arrhythmic. In other words, it helps slow down your pulse, but only has a modest effect in preventing a-fib. As an added bonus, Toprol can treat angina and reduce high blood pressure. Once you're on it, don't stop taking it without talking with your doctor first. Abruptly discontinuing Toprol can lead to nasty side effect, including heart attacks. Guest guest
Mike, Thanks for your input. Ive been on Toprol only for about 5 days now. I dont have high blood pressure but I am in AFib for about 1 month. He is doing tests. The last two days I've had what appears to be heart palpatations on the left side of my chest. I dont know if its the toprol or not. i will see my cardio guy on Wed. Sellon mikesellon@...> wrote: Jim, Toprol is a beta-blocker. Started on metoprolol 7 years ago, 25 mg AM, 25 mgs. PM. Worked wonderfully. Cardio said that I would still have a few 'breakthrough' episodes, but the long runs of a fib stopped. To me it's a wonder drug and I couldn't survive without it. Made me very sleepy for about a week tho, only bad side effect. Recently the a fib episodes got a bit worse, the cardio upped the metoprolol to 50 mg mornings and 50 mg. evenings.Made me a bit sleepy, but he said if my heart was slowed down more, the a fib episodes would decrease. And they have. I think its a wonder drug!Good Luck! *Debbie*
Guest guest
Just to add my 2 cents. My situation seems very similar to Debbie's. I was started on Toprol 25 mg twice a day. I had some episodes 6-8 hours after taking the medicine. They told me that that's about as long as the medicine works. I am now on Toprol XL 100mg/day, which delivers approximately the same dosage evenly over 24 hours. This has lessened my more symptomatic episodes, though they say that if you are prone to the " vagal " type afib, you may experience more of that with the slower heart rate that the beta blockers induce.
