Guest guest
-Sorry guys, just couldn't let this go. While I realize that some smaller services are strapped for cash, $8/hr is WAY below what is being paid in this area. I know some of the folks that work for Marfa EMS and they're all good people, but if you want medics that are worth having, you're gonna have to pay them enough to make it worth their while. Guest guest
Joe, I have to agree with you on the pay there. Too long of a drive and too isolated out in the middle of no where for $8.00/hr. Not sure what is up with the pay. Gonna have to raise it up a few dollars to get any response.
Guest guest
Joe, I am not familiar with the going rate in that area since I am from the other end of the state. However, I wonder what other services are your statements based on? Do those services offer the other benefits that Marfa EMS lists? What benefits are offered but the other services in that area? I agree that $8 per hour sounds low, but my decision is based on the costs of living in Tyler (which ranks up there with some of the more expensive locales in Texas). Just wondering, Tater Joe wrote: -Sorry guys, just couldn't let this go. While I realize that some smaller services are strapped for cash, $8/hr is WAY below what is being paid in this area. Guest guest
Sorry Joe I couldn't let this go: Don't apply if you don't like the pay. They were considerate enough to state up front what the pay was so you wouldn't waste your time. Guest guest
I worked for a long time making only $8/hr and when I get back from this deployment I'll probably go back to making only $8/hr. How much you make has nothing to do with how good you are at your job. I know plenty paramedics who make $20/hr that I wouldnt' let touch me if I was bleeding to death in a ditch and I know plenty paramedics making only $8/hr that I wouldn't let touch me either. I've also seen great paramedics on both ends of the money. Guest guest
Ok, here we go again. Time and time again people on here complain about crappy working conditions and low pay. However, let somebody comment on the low pay offered by an agency, and they better duck. You get the " if you dont like the pay dont apply " or " you aint no better than me cause you make more money " , etc, etc. Folks, as long as you're willing to work for those low wages and accept the crappy working conditions, that's what you're gonna get. Personally, I feel that my experience and ability makes me worth more than that and I wont accept the status quo. If you're willing to, go right ahead, but stop whining about having to work three jobs to make ends meet and how bad the conditions are. The only way we'll get things changed is to say that the conditions are unacceptable and we wont take it. Alright, I put on my asbestos underware so let the flaming start. Guest guest
Again Joe, I ask.... What can you tell me about the pay and benefits of the other services in that area? What is the average income, mortgage, living expense in that area? If I lived in that area, I'd probably be willing to work for that in a job that I love. Id be willing to be that if you compare the economics of it, they aren't as underpaid as you think. All EMS personnel are underpaid..... but when compared to the median salaries in that area, this one actually seems ok. Tater Joe wrote: Ok, here we go again. Guest guest
Simply stated Joe We all appreciate what you are worth. My point was and has been in the past is that maybe just maybe the folks in Marfa or where ever would like to pay more but simply can't. They know that low pay is a problem without you bringing it to their attention and touting how much you are worth. Heck are you even looking for a job in the first place? Lighten up. What have you done to improve EMS and pay other than feel you are worth more. We have a butt load of Rural EMS Directors out there that put their asses on the line every year and try and get more pay for their employees who at times don't appreciate the increase five minutes after they get it because as you say are worth more. I don't know much about Marfa, but from post over the years, it appears they are doing about as much as they can with the resources they have. Just try and remember, it about more than just you. Now that I have done some roasting, get after it, this old bird has been burned before. Henry Barber Joe wrote: > Ok, here we go again. Guest guest
Sorry Tater, I'll try to reply now. The benifits for the other paid services in this area are comperable to what they offer. The closest in pay to them I believe is something like $10.50/hr with incentives for certs above the basic CPR and ACLS. Just about every " skilled " job in this area (and yes that includes plumbers, carpenters, and oilfield hands) pays more than that. I probably shouldn't have started all this, but I just hate to see these low end wages for EMS perpetuated. I love what I'm doing too. A person just about has to to put up with what we do on a daily basis. Its just a shame that a person has to work 2 or 3 jobs to make a living doing what they love and that is so vital to the public welfare. Joe T - In texasems-l , " E. Guest guest
Well said Henry' I direct two services. One in Rural and one in a frontier county in SW Texas. One is partial paid and one is fully paid. Both services were volunteer just two years ago, As the administration of Marfa EMS and many other services out here in the sticks can tell you, it takes time to get the ESDs, County Commissioners, and City Councils to pay a decent wage for services they received free not too long ago. Hats off to Marfa and the other rural services who are doing all they can with out a lot of resources. M Henry wrote: Simply stated Joe We all appreciate what you are worth. Guest guest
Now, Henry, I'm not an economist, and neither are you. However, you're a fisherman, and you find a way to go fishing no matter what, don't you? I have to take issue with your statement that some of the folks in places like Marfa are doing the best they can. My contention is that they have a lot more spendable money than they spend on EMS, but they choose to spend it on things that are for immediate gratification. As I pointed out, I don't know anybody who doesn't still fill up their truck when it's empty or go to the beer store when they're out. My point it that people can afford great EMS if they want to afford it. But they must make the choice. We're not so poor yet that we don't pay for air conditioning, heat, gasoline, diesel, pizza, clothes, and entertainment. We pay for what we choose to pay for. I'm betting that Marfa has the ability to pay top price for good EMS service if it wants to. It can support an art museum, lots of other artsy craftsy stuff, and there are plenty of high powered land owners who are not paying their fair share because of the agri exemptions under the tax laws. Sales taxes are probably still running at 100% of expectations. So there is money there. Folks just don't act maturely in spending it. Isn't it time that EMS decided to force the issue and say to the people, " Pay for it or lose it? " Maybe a year without EMS would be good for a few folks. That's happening in lots of counties in Texas. At last count, there were about 23 counties out of 254 that have no county EMS service, and they're dependent upon services from adjoining counties to save them. Where do they come off expecting that? Why should my county's service cross the line to save folks in the adjoining county who refuse to pay for EMS service? Let's face it. People get what they pay for. And they pay for what they want. If they don't want to pay for EMS, then maybe they ought to do without. Gene G. Guest guest
You gotta love Henry.... Joe does have a point though, we don't get paid enough, fact of the matter is we all agree on that, we just diagree with how we correct it. Joe has his option, and chose it, he chooses not to work for Marfa, and I would make the same decision. It is not necessarily the fact that you won't or can't get good medics at the wage they're paying, but more the fact that they won't attract many from outside their own area with the waqes they are paying. Perhaps Joe may have had a better way of saying what he said, but he is right. Marfa may well be miles ahead of where it was years ago, and from what I can remember from past posts, they have been struggling to stay ahead of the game for years, and done a good job. Joe's perspective is from an employees point of view, Henry's is from the struggling managers point of view, and knowing many who have worked for, and continue to work for Henry, I can say without hesitation that Henry does his best, and has put his big a** on the line more than once for his people. Some services pay a wage that doesn't require us working a second job, now that I am out of probie period, I am there. Though I have been known to work a second job purely out of greed.....:)Others struggle to pay the lower end, either due to managements failure to grasp the plight, or from boards lak of understanding of the plight, either way, you just have to keep plodding on. It has been said many times, that until there are no medics to fill the slots, some will never realize our worth. Sad, but true. Is Marfa such a situation? I don't know, don't know enough about Marfa to say. Point that I am trying to make is that everyone is right, everyone deserves the kudos, and everyone needs to keep working hard at what they are doing to keep things moving forward. Guest guest
, you too are correct. I totally agree. I'm tired---I'm working the downside of a 48 hr shift--- I'm making a good wage--- it hasn't been that way all the time---- but I'm comfortable. Hatfield wrote: You gotta love Henry.... Guest guest
One other point...Joe mentioned about plumbers, carpenters and oilfield workers who all make more than paramedics...funny thing here is that all of these professions get to choose who they serve...your water heater goes out so you call a plumber(s)...and compare rates. The plumber gets paid what he gets paid because people are willing to pay that rate...and if they don't their water heater doesn't get repaired. Plus, if you don't pay...you don't get the service...or if you promise to pay and then don't you get to go to court. The comparison between these professions and healthcare is not a valid one...although interesting that we are comparing our pay to other " blue-collar " workers despite the fact that we claim we want are professionals...hmmmmm.... Guest guest
Gene, You are correct. That is the politics of EMS. I was expressing that the EMS service it's self was probably doing the best it could. I certainly know that more could be done for EMS if the funds were given where the need is. However, don't depend on the public to go to bat for EMS. I would be willing to bet that even in those counties you speak of with no EMS that there has been any Hugh public out cry. My support was for the EMS personnel who are working for the service and are looking for medics. Henry wegandy1938@... wrote: > Now, Henry, I'm not an economist, and neither are you. Guest guest
Henry, I understand your statements, and I, too, see the need to support the local EMS. I know it is doing the best it can. You are undoubtedly right that there has been no outcry from the citizens of those places where they have no EMS. Apathy abounds. And, I suspect that their law enforcement folk have the numbers of the helo services, and they can get air crews when they think they need them. So they don't think they're totally without EMS. But how did we ever let the politics of EMS get us to the place we are? We have always taken what was given, after much begging, and never asserted ourselves as being either necessary or deserving of better than we have received. The politics needs to change. We need to slap some folks upside the head with the realities of life and do it soon, or else EMS is going to become the province of the few. I suggest that we begin by each making a trip to visit our own legislators and have a heart to heart talk with them. We have to start somewhere. Every state and federal legislator has many people competing for time and ideas. We never seem to even get in the door. Generally because we don't even try. Now, I know what you, Henry, have done, and I know the battles you've fought, and I'm not talking to you personally. I'm talking to all the rest of the denizens of these lists who lurk and never commit to anything. Isn't it time for all of us to come out of the shadows and make ourselves heard? It only takes a phone call, an email, a letter, a visit to the local office. Let's do it. You can find your state representative by googling Texas Legislature Online. You don't have to be eloquent. You don't have to write like a novelist. You just need to get the point across that EMS is not being supported by our great state, and that it is in danger of failing as an institution unless it gets state recognition and support. Don't forget your city council people and your county commissioners either. They don't want to hear from you, but just remind them that you vote. And tell them that you are a ONE ISSUE VOTER, and that issue is EMS. Then get a neighbor to do the same thing. We can be a force if we'll get off our butts and just do it. Henry, you have been in the fight for longer than I have, and you know book and page how this works. I know you've had many plans that didn't work out, but I also know that you're one very savvy individual. Let us know your formula for how to improve our public image and get our state legislature to pay attention to us. I know you've got good ideas. Who else? Come on! Let's hear it. When are we going to march on the Capitol and scream " We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore? " Gene G. Guest guest
Once again Gene you are 100% RIGHT. Unfortunately EMS for the most part is a local by local issue. EMS Directors like myself who have been in the same place for 26 years is very very uncommon. Usually as soon as a EMS Director begins to stir the pot, they are out of there. A new guy is hired, usually someone young and inexperienced that they can handle for a while. I really think we can talk to our legislators until we are blue in the face and we will get nothing but lip service. We are a fractured group because at local level that is how it is designed to work. We are not a union but local politics treat us as such. When I reference local politics I am not really referencing here in Calhoun County. We do get an amazing amount of support and have over the years. That doesn't mean it is easy, just that it could be a lot worse. Hell Gene I don't know the answer. I have a gut feeling that our own board would start us in the right direction but that again is just a gut feeling. I have not given up, just slowed down. I have always been willing to serve on any committee where I thought my representation would be helpful. I am usually good for a couple of years until I get kicked off. I have always felt that I was there to represent the little guy in EMS and not my own personal agenda. Of course I have always been politically correct. You tell me the answer because I don't know.
