Guest guest
MY daugter Bianca has scoliosis that has been advancing, she has went from 12 to 17 degrees in the past 9 months, the doctor says that if it advances to 20 degrees ,she will have to stop getting her growth hormones.(SHE IS ONLY 4 FT 1) Has anyone tried a soft brace with their child and does it work? I would like to try to keep her scoliosis from advancing anymore and would like to try a soft brace now,so I can keep giving her her growth hormones ,but the doctor says lets wait and see and I would not brace her just yet. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, I couldn't find Bianca's age, and that's an important part of the equation. Specific core strengthening and stretching exercises done daily will be a significant piece of your total therapy package, whether you choose to brace or not. Kate is a pt who sometimes has time to respond to the list, and she could talk about soft braces with Charge. Some parents have tried " thera-suits " and could comment. Hippotherapy (horseback riding) is one way to strengthen the core muscles and improve balance and posture. Doing balance work while sitting on an exercise ball also works those muscles, and doesn't eat as much as a horse. Seriously, an exercise ball is available daily- most of us don't own horses, so can't get there that often. I'll forward some of the previous emails to you regarding treatment of scoliosis. ;-) in Ma. (, 21 yrs. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, My daughter is just now going through then scoliosis eval. She was diagnosed to have a 23 degree curve. Her Ortho told us if it advances 5 more degrees in 4 mos., he would put her in a brace. We are also looking at growth hormone but have not gone that route yet. Her Dr. was not concerned with GH increasing the curve. (I'm not convinced so I'll wait and see.) My daughter is 9 years old and her Dr. also said she is younger for the dianosis and ordered a full spine MRI to make sure there is nothing else causing this curvature(i.e. a growth, tumor, etc..). He said x- rays show the curve but not a clear picture of any other contributors. He told us if she were 11 or older they probably would not do it. Also, she is to have an MRI of her pituitary gland at the same time to see if there is an issue here contributing the her slow growth. Don't know if this helps. We are looking at a soft brace for abdomen protection as her one kidney is fused to the other and located in her abdomenal area. If she is protected then see can participate with her class in PE. Figured we could included this with scoliosis brace?!
