I had open. My surgeon keeps a drain tube in the old stomach for 2 1/2 weeks

post op. He does not want us driving before the tube is out. No chance of

the steering wheeling hitting it.

Hi all,

Anxiously awaiting our dates.. but I'm wondering.. for those of you

who have had open RNY... how long is it before you're up and able to

drive? If hubby is having his surgery a week before mine, I wonder

if he's going to be up to driving to and from the hospital the day of

my surgery... any ideas?

Mia - As long as he doesn't need his pain meds anymore, he should be OK to

drive. By that time, I was on Tylenol during the day, so I imagine he will be

OK. Maybe have a backup for ride home from the hospital, just in case.

Mia--

Your Dr could give you his protocol. Mine said no driving until 2 weeks

post-op. so, if hubby is getting his done 1 week before you, I would think

driving is out of the question. Even after 2 weeks, see how comfortable you

might be twisting around to look behind you since all cannot be seen in a rear

view mirror. I waited to drive til 1 month out, but had my DH to take me places

and there was no rush to get back behind the wheel.

My doc said to wait to drive until the staples were out.

I had lap though. But back when I had my gall bladder surgery 21 yrs ago, I

was just learning to drive, and that doc said not for 4 weeks. But I was

young! 15yrs old. That was an open procedure way back in the dark ages.

Yes, I've heard of some people driving that soon.... My

surgeon requires us to wear a binder for a month. That

helped a lot in giving support and comfort, and made short

drives possible. But you might think of a cab home ..... and

then take a pillow for your belly over bumps.

Cheers!

Dear Mia,

I was not suppose to drive for three weeks. I had my surgery on

9/5/02 and my first appointment was 9/25/02.

I might have 'thought' I was up for driving but in reality ... I got

tired so easily and it really is safer to wait.

Just my opinion. ::Big Hugs::

Love,

Trace
