A few posts back, I told you about the CCR protocol that was evaluated in eleven Arizona Fire Departments. Some of the fire agencies provided CPR using standard chest compressions and ventilation with an OPA and a bag-valve mask (BVM group). The others provided standard chest compressions, but instead of ventilating with a BVM, the medics inserted an OPA and placed a NRB mask on the patient's face at 15 lpm oxygen flow (passive insufflation group). Four-hundred and forty-two patients were enrolled - 68% received BVM ventilation. Standard characteristics did not differ between the two groups. For all patients in cardiac arrest, ventilation with a BVM did not improve survival to hospital discharge rates compared to passive insufflation (8% vs. 12.7%, respectively, p > 0.05).
